FUNCTION (Ostgut Ton / USA)
15년 경력의 Function 은 언더그라운드 테크노씬의 진정한 영웅이다. 뉴욕 출신의 그는 90년대초 Jeff Mills 가 레지던트 디제이로 있던 클럽 Limelight (Function의 첫번째 레지던트 클럽이기도 한) 에서 테크노 음악에 매료되어, 90년대 중반부터 테크노 음악을 프로듀싱하기 시작, Damon Wild의 레이블 Synewave 에서 그의 트랙들을 릴리즈 하였다. 또, Regis 와 함께 의기투합하여 Portion Reform 이라는 이름으로 레이블 Downwards 에서 음악을 발표하며 활동하기 시작했다.
2008년 베를린으로 활동무대를 옮긴 그는 Regis, Silent Servant 와 함께 레이블 [Sandwell District] 활동을 시작하였는데, 이 레이블은 곧 광적인 지지세력들과 막강한 파급력을 가지게 되면서 아티스트와, 디제이, 레이블의 경계를 허물며 모던 댄스음악계에 새로운 DNA구조를 심어놓게 되었다. 2013년 Function은 그의 데뷔앨범 'Incubation' 을 Ostgut Ton에서 발매한다. 총 9곡이 수록된 이 앨범은 전통적인 전자음악의 토대위에 뒤틀린 클럽 트랙들과 고조되는 스트링 사운드, 복잡하게 연결된 멜로디 라인들로 무장되어 청취자들을 모던한 소리의 세계로 인도한다. 이 앨범의 최종믹스작업은 독일 테크노씬의 유명 엔지니어인 Tobias Freund이 담당하였으며, Function의 수년에 걸친 노하우와 경험들을 담아내어 대담하고 강력한 테크노 아티스트의 첫 앨범을 완성시켰다.
One of techno's true underground heroes, Function (Dave Sumner) has been DJing and making music for over 15 years. Hailing from New York, he was seduced by techno music when Jeff Mills held a residency (as well as his own first) at the Limelight in the early 90s. Dave started to produce music and from the mid-90s onwards, put out music on Damon Wild's Synewave and his own Infrastructure imprint. Together with Regis (Karl O'Connor) he worked as Portion Reform, putting out uncompromising music on Downwards and becoming the only non-Birmingham producer to release on the label.
In 2008 Dave moved to Berlin, still working with Regis, and now Silent Servant (John Mendez), put his focus on the acclaimed Sandwell District imprint. Since, the label, now come collective, has skyrocketed into cult status. Decentralizing the artist ego, Sandwell District has blurred the lines between the artist, label and dj, re-arranging the DNA of modern dance music. In march 2013 Function presents his debut album 'Incubation' on Ostgut Ton. A modern sound journey heavy on imagery, over nine tracks we are skillfully guided through writhing, layered club tracks, soaring string-led , and complex melodic pieces founded on classic electronic traditions. Function enlisted cult German engineer Tobias Freund for the final mixes, adding his years of experience to this succinct, daring and artistic album. A bold and powerful long-player debut from one of Techno's key players.
