HEADLINERS / Lerato Khathi aka Lakuti emerged out of the ruins of a post – apartheid South Africa. Growing up in an impoverished Soweto in Johannesburg, Lakuti took a deep interest in music from a very young age, inspired by her mother’s impressive collection of Soul & Funk. Her grandfather also played a significant part in further nurturing her musical interest by schooling her in the art of Jazz. She inherited his jazz collection when he passed away and to this date has held onto every piece of vinyl from this collection. The biggest influence & inspiration was to come however with the first batch of Chicago house records, which made their way into the township. Her first adventure onto a musical path came when she convinced an empty 100 capacity theatre in a then arty Yeoville – a suburb in Johannesburg, to let her use the space as a small club in the early 90′s, whilst embarking on a Law Degree. Planet hendon was born. She successfully ran the space for 2 years & in that 2 years the club saw dj sets from the cream of the crop of dj’s at the time in Johannesburg. Around the same period, she met Alan Abrahams aka Portable/Bodycode & collaborated with him on a few music projects. Some of those works were released on South african deep house label, dj syndicate. Lakuti inevitably became frustrated with the geographic isolation of the country and relocated to London in 1997 ; after a 3 year stint in Toronto Canada, where she studied film and worked on various film related projects. She immediately looked into dedicating herself full time into music & looked at ways of achieving that goal. A break through came when she met the legendary Earl Gateshead, the powerhouse behind the Trojan Soundsytem , who took her under his wing. They promoted a monthly Friday for about 1 year at the hugely influential underground hub, Plastic People in London. Lakuti alongside alan “Portable” Abrahams also established and ran their successful underground parties in London under the Süd banner. The events ran for 11 years until November 2011 and saw performances from artists such as Juan Atkins, Move D, Rik Wade, Dj Jus Ed, Prosumer, Lawrence/Sten, Efdemin, Carsten Jost, Pantha Du Prince, Shed, Daniel Bell, e.t.c. They established the Süd Electronic imprint in October 2002 & Lakuti established Uzuri Recordings Nov 2007 to rave reviews & has since established The Uzuri Artist Bookings & Management agency. What more can be said about the fabulous Honey Dijon. She has rightly taken her place in the music world as one of the most exciting and unique talents today with her innovative and unique sound. She also boasts some impressive accolades from some of the biggest names in dance music from Danny Tenaglia to Derrick Carter. Based in NYC, born and bred in the Windy City, Honey is known for her unique take on the Chicago sound with inflections of the deep New York underground. In fact, Honey is one of the few dj’s in recent years to defy pigeon-holing. She draws from a wide repertoire of musical styles from old school Chicago House, disco, tech house, tribal, funk, soul, and R& B. She has graced the tables from Ministry of Sound London to Ushuaia Ibiza, Panorama Bar Berlin, Stereo Montreal and everywhere in between. She has also shared the decks with none other Danny Tenaglia, Derrick Carter, Green Velvet, The Martinez Brothers, Satoshi Tomiie, and Quentin Harris. Honey is also entering one of the most prolific times in her career not only as a DJ , but as a producer as well. Collaborating with such legendary vocalists Dajae and Celeda, Honey can count Toolroom Records, Nervous, Mile End, Stereo Productions, Deeperfect, Classic Recordings as a few of the labels she has released tracks on. She also runs her own label Digital Disco which has seen artists DJ Sneak, Jeremy Joshua, Derrick Carter, Luke Solomon and Orangemuse all contribute to it’s growing success. Honey has also remixed, along with her studio partner Sebastian Manuel, pop acts Cyndi Lauper, Casey Spooner, R.E.M, and Jessica 6 spreading her infectious sound to garner even more fans around the world. The mysterious Oracy is in fact better known as Don Williams, who himself is one of the most subversive artists of the Berlin techno scene. His path of eastern German Techno-socialization began in the mid-nineties and led quickly from mere record collector up to producer and co-founder of the label Tokomak. It was here that in 1999 his first release appeared, followed by releases on Mark Broom’s Pure Plastic, as well as Rewired, Styrax and Styrax Leaves. He founded his own label Mojuba in 2005, which has since gone on to epitomise the resurgent deep house sound. As Oracy, he was at the centre of this movement. His techno productions found an adequate home in 2006 with the formation of the label a.r.t.less. In 2008 followed the label wandering, which features many different styles. In his label catalogue, besides his personal releases, one can find artists such as Chez Damier, Ron Trent, Steve Rachmad, Mark Kinchen and many, many more. Being at home with many different styles of electronic music, as a DJ Don Williams stands for Detroit-style Technosound with just the right amount of historical awareness, internationally as well as on the home front at Panorama Bar, where since 2008 the Mojuba-label nights have been hosted. Currently Don Williams is working on numerous new projects, focusing mainly on his own productions and remixes as well as completing his debut album – always commemorating the legacy of house and techno. Alland Byallo is a DJ, producer, label owner, graphic designer and event organizer – a tour de force within the club and underground music scenes. Born in Los Angeles, Alland began his musical journey at a young age. Trying his hand at piano and trumpet as a young boy and influenced by the experimental electronic sounds of the early 90s, Alland grew captivated with the world of dance music, began experimenting with basic production and eventually bought his first pair of turntables. While working at WAX Records, LA’s now defunct authority on dance music, Alland’s tastes matured, and a move to San Francisco in 2003 saw Alland’s star rise quickly; while in SF, Alland honed his talents DJ-ing at respected venues stateside and overseas, started his own an underground dance music label named Nightlight Music and launched one of California’s most inspired techno-focused nightclub events, the monthly [KONTROL]. Gaining global attention producing gems for definitive record labels such asPoker Flat, Liebe*Detail, Real Tone, and Dirt Crew, by the time Alland garnered four stars from influential web-based dance music magazine Resident Advisor for his original full-length album release, Brick By Brick (2009), Alland’s devotion to the techno-house sound was plain to see and his fate as one of dance music’s major talents was reasonably sealed. At the same time, Alland’s ongoing DJ residency at San Francisco's legendary [KONTROL] party found him sharing the stage with a roster of talent that reads like a who’s who in underground house and techno, leading to a solid demand for Alland at dance music gatherings around the globe – often as a headliner at renowned events and venues like Berlin’s Panoramabar, Watergate, Bar25, Cookies and Tresor, Munich’s Harry Klein, Brazil’s D-Edge, Tokyo’s La Fabrique, and America's Smartbar and DEMF Movement Festival among many others. More recently, a move to Berlin has Alland expanding his horizons and focusing not only on DJing and producing but also label management, with the launch of Bad Animal. The label is set to explore the more intimate side of dance music and cultivate productions from Alland and a close-knit group of friends. Endlessly inspired by his new home, Byallo continues to work hard and forge ahead with steady musical output, adding a greater organic touch to his productions – more vocals, more experimentation, and dare it be said, a little more techno soul. K15, aka X, is London’s latest ascendant talent. He has made few efforts to seek the limelight, simply stating himself to be a man interested in “records, chords and the occasional vocal stab” and one who can often be found “at the back of the room”. His rich and cultured sound is borne from the other side of the pond, despite his London heritage, and is infused with soul, hip-hop, jazz and house. Unsurprisingly, it has not taken long for his sound to draw attention from many of the scene’s leading lights. His debut release on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats was met with great acclaim and a follow-up release on Omar S’s FXHE is rumoured to be in the works. This guy is really about to blow up and this will be a prime opportunity to catch him on his Leeds debut. Nubiyan Twist are a 12 piece outfit based in Leeds/London, fusing groove driven music from around the world with soundsystem culture and jazz inspired improvisation. A culmination of musicians, dj's and producers alike, the band strives to encourage artistic and social unity between different cultures and musical styles. Notable influences include the likes of Fela Kuti, King Tubby, J Dilla and Herbie Hancock. Over the band's 3 year lifespan they have collaborated with Ruby Wood (Submotion Orchestra) and played alongside the likes of De La Soul, Hot 8 Brass Band, Quantic, Robert Glasper, DJ Yoda and DJ Vadim to name a few. With 3 EPs under their belt in 2014 and a debut album just released on Wormfood Records, things are looking really promising and we are extremely excited to have them headline the terrace at Flux. Galaxians are within the same playful electronic sound-frame of artists like Todd Terje, Errors and Hot Chip. Jed Skinner and Matt Woodward make the kind of ear-pleasing music that’s never takes itself too seriously – always up for a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun, but at the same time brilliantly exacted. The Leeds-based duo have been kicking about since 2012 and have released two vinyl EPs – Personal Disco Component and Galaxians back in June, which have a hint of early LCD Soundsystem and even some Beverly Hills Cop in its four visceral tracks. Live, Galaxians stir up head-nodding funky grooves using drum machines and retro synthesisers – mixing elements of old school dance and soul music wrapped in thumping and clicking beats. After successful stints at Beacons festival and Tramlines festival over the summer – making gig-goers across the UK dance and gawp in appreciative awe in equal measure they are back making their debut at Flux.
