Catch The Train

  • JACK THE BOX: The charismatic Jack The Box duo has been for years a coveted secret of Berlin’s underground House scene. Hip House founding father Tyree Cooper and British House producer Bobby Starrr teamed up as a DJ duo in 2007 and six years later finally released their long awaited debut album “Side A” in 2013. Their production forte are soulful vocal tracks and attracting surprise artists for their studio collaborations. Cooper's and Starrr's undeniable charisma and enthusiasm for deep, Chicago inspired yet contemporary house music and their flawless track record of successful parties as a DJ duo has garnered them a distinguished reputation among a remarkably high caliber of crowd-pleasers. As Jack The Box they now fuse their long-term collaboration into one sound that reflects each of the artists' background: Chicago inspired traditional House music with a fresh and contemporary Berlin vibe. The charismatic duo realized that despite each artist owning a strong identity, they perfectly complement each other’s style. It was soon decided to convey this into one sound collage of House. With the success of their party franchises in Berlin, the natural progression was to produce together. The project’s name, Jack The Box, an homage to the Chicago house scene, was found shortly after. Collaborations with the likes of Bam of the Jungle Brothers and Lady Blacktronika on their debut album “Side A” (Moodmusic), are evidence that the duo has been given a warm welcome from the underground House scene. Already “The Way We Walk”, feature track of their first single collaboration: “Jack the Box presents: The Tyree Cooper and Bobby Starrr E.P.”, was greeted with kudos by the house scene in September 2012 and is followed by a four pack remix EP of the track in February 2014. “Pon de Underground (Dingeman Remix)” on the second single output was selected for Defected Records’ hit summer compilation “Loco Dice in the House”. With their underground club night franchise ‘Lunar Phase’, DJ Tyree Cooper and DJ Bobby Starrr celebrate the evolution of a musical genre and provoke such inspiration and shifting of the paradigm. For Lunar Phase, the two artists seek out talent who inspire the evolution of the genre and the very specific and ever evolving taste buds of Berlin's underground scene. The franchise aims to select guest DJs that inspire the duo’s personal artistic inspiration. It held residency at Kater Holzig, Loftus Hall and Kleine Reise before its voluntary hiatus in 2013 due to the heavy promotion and tour schedule surrounding the album release. Lunar Phase is planned to return in form of one-off events at different locations in 2014. As DJ Bobby Starrr and DJ Tyree Cooper, they are bringing back House to Berlin’s legendary Techno club Tresor with their monthly residency 'e·man·ci·pate' which has seen guest artists that have left a distinctive mark in the history of House music or whose current work is so extraordinary, that they are bound to become classics in the future, such as Lil Louis, Terrence Parker, Tom Trago, Nicholas and Farley Jackmaster Funk. In 2009 Starrr and Cooper were approached by Sweatlodge Radio to host a weekly radio show which Starrr continued to curate until early in 2014. Regular pan-European co-hosts of the show were Tyree Cooper broadcasting from Yuma Bar; Joost Dulac, broadcasting from Soundfreax in Amsterdam; and DJ Upi, broadcasting from various clubs, bars and even saunas in Helsinki. Featured in-house guests included Mandel Turner (New York, Paris), Red Rack’em (Nottingham), Joe Babylon (San Jose), DJ Toh (Tokyo), and Bryan Agent Pepper (Paris). Further highlights invited by the duo to perform at their various events were DJ Yellow (Paris), K’Alexi Shelby (Chicago), Dole and Kom (Berlin), Peter Power (Dublin), Terry Farley (London), Filippo ‘Naughty’ Moscatello (Berlin), Charles Webster (Nottingham), Frankie Valentine (London), and Dan Curtain (Cleveland). JACK THE BOX, DJ Tyree Cooper and DJ Bobby Starrr non-domestic bookings are represented exclusively by Claudia Schneider of Pearl’s Booking, Berlin. ANTONIO OLIVIERI Antonio Olivieri, born in Italy, is a passionate music lover. After some experiences with major Italian labels such as Saifam Group in his early years, Antonio became exhausted by the mainstream philosophy and moved to Berlin in 2008 to fulfil his view on modern electronic music. At this point he had already left pure djing and put his focus on performing live sets to convey a genuine live feeling to the audience. The audible result is a dance-floor journey through Funk, Deep-House and Eclecticism which results into a tasty mix of solid grooves and extraordinary melody sequences. Antonio’s belief in concrete and emotional music prevails, as a statement against the aesthetic crisis which is affecting many of today’s music productions. In the past, Antonio surely proved that he is a capable and highly skilled actor, touching different moods and styles. Listening to his music, it is not hard to notice his aptitude for melody, which he probably owes to his education on the classical guitar for many years. Latest vinyl and digital releases are on “Darkroom Dubs” and on the newcomer Berliner imprint “Steyoyoke”. Older releases worth mentioning are surely “Noton” with the Belgian label “LiftYourHeadUp” (an unconventional approach on classical guitar recordings and nasty, basic rhythms), as well as his EPs on "LustundFreu.de" from Cologne.
