Pimms, Wimbledon, Glastonbury, Carnival… there aren’t many signs that summer is here in the UK, so we have to grasp them where we can. For us, summer means one thing: terrace parties. Some of our best parties have been those on our humble terrace. Nothing quite beats those intimate parties with the kind of high spirits that can only come from blue skies and sunshine beating down.
Kicking off our terrace parties for 2015 on 28th June will be Quiet Village aka Matt Edwards and Joel Martin. Taking their name from Martin Denny’s exotica masterpiece, Quiet Village create mellow, downtempo and sample-rife music, fundamentally different to the Radio Slave or Rekid sound.
Following the release of three 12”s on the much-lauded and discerning New York label Whatever We Want, the duo released their debut album in 2008, Silent Movie, which made the old sound new and vice versa. Influenced by Italian film soundtracks, BBC library music, disco edits, acid rock, vintage soul and easy listening, the album received critical acclaim, elevating Quiet Village to the kind of connoisseurs’ favourite status that most artists can only dream of being.
Since then, they haven’t released much, but what they do lack in quantity they make up for in abundance in quality. They are highly selective of where they play, making this a very rare appearance from them.
They’ll be joined by Dial label founder and long time Oval Space friend Lawrence who recently released the excellent Manhattan EP on Smallville, enigmatic Brooklyn based producer Galcher Lustwerk and Phonica Records’ very own Simon Rigg.
