  • Prostitutes, the idiosyncratic techno project of Jim Donadio whose catalog draws inspiration from punk, industrial, noise, and funk sources, makes his long anticipated debut performance this Labor Day weekend in Detroit. He will be performing live on Sept 6th on the patio at Mudgie’s Deli. It is no surprise to detect the myriad of influence through Jim’s productions. You’ll often find him working the bins at Bent Crayon, a Midwest record institution run by owner, John Cellura, serving nearly 20 years as one of the nation’s most important emporiums for experimental music. London-based Resident Advisor says of Prostitutes: “As we run through his ever-growing catalog (12 titles spread over nine imprints to date), it becomes clear that any one label, or even bundle of labels, ultimately fails to capture the radical pluralism coursing through his sound.” Prostitutes has a couple forthcoming projects, including his second full length for Spectrum Spools entitled, Ghost Detergent, as well as an EP for Powell’s Diagonal Records. Diagonal has previous releases music from Prostitutes and also, Streetwalker, featuring Chicago-based artist Beau Wanzer. It is fitting then that Beau Wanzer is also playing the Labor Day weekend event. Wanzer began working at a legendary Chicago record store, Weekend Records & Soap, in 2001. Weekend was owned by James Marlon Magas, a long-active member of the Midwest punk and no wave scene who also released a handful of electro records as Magas, on ADULT.'s Detroit-based Ersatz Audio label. It was at Weekend where Wanzer discovered the raw electro and outsider techno sounds of labels like Bunker and Crème Organization from the Netherlands. While also working at Weekend, Wanzer met fellow Chicagoan Melvin Oliphant III (a.k.a. Traxx) and the two became friends, bonding over music and records when Oliphant would visit the shop. They eventually collaborated under the name Mutant Beat Dance. Other projects from Beau include Juzer, Civil Duty with friend Shawn O’Sullivan (a.k.a. Further Reductions), and his own self-released untitled records, all of which have been met with critical acclaim. Wanzer says: "I obviously like dark music, but dark music with a sense of humor is key. I've never taken myself too seriously, and that's something I hope to convey with my music. It's good to have a sense of humor with whatever you do -- balancing the macabre with a sense of playfulness." Like Powell, Wanzer will be performing a live set. DJ support is courtesy of Community Corporation, a project of Detroiter Taylor Hawkins. Community Corporation (Argot, Crisis Urbana) was included in a recent Spin Mag watch list of up-and-coming Detroit techno producers. Hawkins will be doing a DJ set, as will fellow Detroiter Abdallah Siblani aka Rawaat (Crisis Urbana, Lobster Theremin). Seeing and hearing these two young guys do their quirky groove thing with vinyl will be a treat. Also DJing are Nospectacle's Walter Wasacz, who recently began working with Rod Modell (Deepchord, Echospace, CV313) and Christopher McNamara (Nospectacle, Thinkbox) on a new dub-ambient audio-video project called Shorelights; and Soren and Drew Pompa, who are the curators of the monthly Detroit party, Aphotic Segment. Drew also runs Detroit-based label, We Are All Machines and co-produces under the name, The Siege. Expect to see a couple of brand new releases from The Siege in the coming months. The party, a We Are All Machines, Crisis Urbana, and Nospectacle co-production (two-thirds of the organizers also brought Modern Love artists Demdike Stare and Andy Stott to the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit last year) is Sunday, Sept. 6th at Mudgie's, 1300 Porter St., Detroit. Sound and lights by Audio Rescue Team. Out of respect for the neighbors, the event starts at 2 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. There is a $10 cover charge all day long. This event is eighteen and up, though bartenders will be checking IDs before serving. Local pop-up favorites, Katoi, will be serving a special menu of modern Thai-inspired cuisine from 5 p.m. until supplies run out. An Aphotic Segment after-party is at Nancy Whiskey, 10 p.m. - 2 a.m. That party, which features residents Soren and Drew Pompa, as well as special guest DJs, is free. We look forward to seeing you on the dance floor.
