Industry of Machines presents: DJ Spider, Shawn O'sullivan & Phase Fatale

  • Industry of Machines presents: DJ Spider (TTT | Killekill | NORD Records | Plan B Recordings || NYC) Shawn O'Sullivan LIVE (LIES | Avian | Minimal Wave || Brooklyn) Phase Fatale (Jealous God | [aufnahme + wiedergabe] || NYC/Berlin) It's holiday time again, and just before Xmas cheer IofM is bringing the leather and the fear out for one of our most future-facing lineups in some time. Shawn O'Sullivan has been a frequent guest and DJ Spider has made one memorable appearance on a night dedicated to his Plan B imprint, but both are growing in recent months. Adding a tough spice to the pot is the upcomer Phase Fatale, who has recently been making waves on the bleeding edge of Berlin's EBM/techno crossover scene. Many of our programs spiral into darkness; none will more surely arrive there than this. DJ Spider is one of New York's hardest working DJs as well as one of its most distinctive producers, a longtime veteran of many scenes whose roots in noise, old school deep house, hardcore punk, and techno show through clearly in his style both on the decks and in the studio. At this point deserving of OG status, Spider was at the forefront of the reemergence of New York's house and techno scene in 2008 and has been going hard ever since, making appearances in Berghain, FreeRotation, Concrete, and many of the world's most famous locations and earning releases on prestigious labels like The Trilogy Tapes, Killekill, Nord, and many others. His own Plan B Recordings quickly established itself as an outlet for New York's most outward-bound house and techno, releasing material from himself, label co-head Dakini9, the upcoming Phil Moffa, and others. Always impressive behind the decks, placed alongside sympathetic company we expect Spider to plumb the depths of the shadows. Brace yourselves. A member of Further Reductions, Civil Duty and the now-defunct Led Er Est and a solo artist under his own name, Vapauteen, 400PPM, and various secret projects, Shawn O'Sullivan has quietly risen to become one of the most respected names in techno now working in New York. A devotee of hard techno and industrial music in all of their best permutations, Shawn has weathered the changes from the Midwest raves of the '90s and the mid-2000s downturn in New York's scene to arrive finally at a time when popular tastes and his own are falling in sync. Releases on Avian, the Corner, L.I.E.S., Minimal Wave, and WT Records have all been well-received, as have appearances both nationally and internationally: Berghain, Japan's RURAL Festival, Mount Analog's increasingly storied Nuit Noire events, to name a few. IofM has been honoured to host him as a DJ, solo live, as Civil Duty, and as Further Reductions; for this night, he returns with an awaited, always-ferocious live PA sets to bring more terror to a night brimming with noirish tendencies. Phase Fatale is New York's Hayden Payne, a recent transplant to Berlin who sits at the centre of a developing scene rising to international recognition. Berghain's increasing fame has not diluted its programming at all, but there are those who now seek harder, sleazier territory, sinking into the black depths of EBM and industrial music and blurring lines between leather, fetsih nights, and sex parties and a kind of hardcore dance music that has not found acceptance on dancefloors since the '90s. Avant guard to be sure but appearing alongside names like Orphx's Rich Oddie, his new duo O/H, fellow New York-Berlin transplant Blush Response, and others, Phase Fatale's cutting-edge sonics are part of a rising landscape whose boundaries remain undefined. Recently signed to the similarly searching Jealous God imprint, we expect great things from Hayden in the near future, and we're proud to welcome him home to bruise New York for the holidays.
