Young Male Live, Pure Matrix Live, DJ Spider and More // Bad Room: Desert Sound Colony (DJ Set)

  • YOUNG MALE Young Male is a techno project begun in 2008 by Quinn Taylor, a producer and dj based in Brooklyn, New York. He is the co-founder of the New York crew/record label White Material, a group of techno, house and noise musicians. His live performances utilise a Roland TR909 drum machine, mixer, guitar fx pedals, and eerie sound textures. His first record was self-released in August of 2012 on White Material Records. He displays more commonality with the sleek productions of Function and his Sandwell District associates than anything to have been inspired by America’s contemporary noise techno artists, pitched somewhere right between classic Detroit minimalism and the more forceful techno which was prominent in New York in the early 90s. PURE MATRIX Danny Moore aka Pvre Matrix is from a generation of young techno producers out of Brooklyn who come at the music without preconcieved notions or boundaries in their approach to production and playing live. He is the epitomy of the slash and burn blitzkrieg attitude of new producers popping up under the JMZ everyday. While very interesting to see the scene develop this way, few have executed in such a fashion as Pvre Matrix has. Impeccabily produced without losing its sense of urgency or brutality and clocking in at breakneck speed, Pvre Matrix is out for blood, and his three track debuts prove as such. While you might not catch Danny Moore in your local big room anytime soon, he is undeniably a force that is present and will crush you regardless. DJ SPIDER DJ Spider is one of New York's hardest working DJs as well as one of its most distinctive producers, a longtime veteran of many scenes whose roots in noise, old school deep house, hardcore punk, and techno show through clearly in his style both on the decks and in the studio. At this point deserving of OG status, Spider was at the forefront of the reemergence of New York's house and techno scene in 2008 and has been working hard ever since, making several appearances in Berghain, FreeRotation, Concrete, and many of the world's most famous locations and earning releases on prestigious labels like The Trilogy Tapes, Killekill, Rekids, and many others. His own Plan B Recordings and Sublevel Sounds labels quickly established themselves as an outlet for New York's most outward-bound house and techno, releasing material from himself, label co-head Dakini9, the upcoming Phil Moffa, and others. DESERT SOUND COLONY Created in the isolation of the British countryside, Desert Sound Colony is inspired by faintly remembered sounds and almost forgotten memories. The thread running through the melodic, visceral tracks touch on a sense of melancholy present within us all. Occupying a space somewhere between ‘60s Psychedelia and the pulsating sounds of future-clubs, Desert Sound Colony is both infectious and ethereal, shrouding the listener in a gentle, rhythmical canopy. With their new EP 'Signals' is out on May 13, we thought it would be the perfect time to bring them into the Bad Room for an all-nighter. The new single follows the band’s second EP: Cracks, for Frank & Tony’s Scissor & Thread imprint. Since emerging onto the scene with their debut EP for the label in 2014 they have developed from a solo project into a full band, which in turn has added layers to their alluring sound.
