Luke Hess, Marshall Applewhite, the Friend and Shady P Plus Douglas Sherman in the Bad Room

  • Every year Movement comes and goes, but we're keeping the spirit of Detroit alive all year round at Good Room. We have a special Detroit line up for all you guys who might be missing the motor city after the festival with Luke Hess and Detroit Sludge artists Marshall Applewhite, The Friend and Shady P. LUKE HESS Luke Hess is the new star out of Detroit. He has celebrated EPs out on Omar S' FXHE, Carl Craig's Planet-e, Echocord, Echocord Colour, Ornaments, Kontra-Musik, Beretta Grey and Modelisme. His new Detroit label DeepLabs will be the center for his own deeply personal projects. Born in 1980 in Metro Detroit and subject to the city's mid-90's warehouse parties, Luke Hess has harnessed a deep appreciation for electronic music and the expression of the underground movement. His background in mathematics and engineering has given him a scientific approach to the dance-floor, using frequencies, tones, and soundscapes to transform surroundings and mood. MARSHALL APPLEWHITE Detroit based producer/DJ Marshall Applewhite has set himself off into a journey of sonic terror reaching out to the late night, early morning, ears of exotic dance music fans around the globe. His sound, albeit jarring at times, encompasses the gritty nature of the city he brought up in. Co-heading the “Detroit Sludge” movement with The Friend, Applewhite has brought new life into the techno world. Slow low, acid, low frequency soundscapes are all apart of what makes Applewhite unique in an overpopulated world of generic music. With a slew of releases out on Detroit Underground, How To Kill, Clan Destine, Senseless Neon and his own YoSucka! Music, Marshall is showing no sign of slowing down. THE FRIEND The Friend runs two all-vinyl labels: Local Heat and How to Kill. Both labels release a variety of genres, but focus extensively on the new Detroit sound known as Sludge. Detroit Sludge is a genre that takes its cues from industrial, techno, house, and ghettotech, and is distinguished by its filthy sultriness. It was created by Konstantin (working under the alias ‘The Friend’), fellow Detroit artists Marshall Applewhite and Adult Supervision. Its sound has been described as “the echoes of the hollowed innards of a now derelict factory, punctuated by inevitable progress and the crunch of feet on cracked ice.” As far as his productions, Konstantin is, by all means, a tape fanatic and a massive proponent of found sound. One might go so far as to say that he’s noise and sound obsessed. Stemming from his passion of sonic artifacts, he employs a vast variety of gear in his productions, pulling from a large artillery of material that he’s collected over the years. The resulting product leaves even the listener damp with sex and caked in grime. Konstantin’s music has been described as having a primal sultriness, well suited to a dark, humid room full of pulsating bodies, a room quivering from massive sound, looming bass-lines, and loose rhythms that hiss and sway as if held together by tape or string. SHADY P As one of the three pioneers of the current Detroit Sludge movement, helmed as the 5th Wave in the evolution of Detroit Techno, Shady P produces its raw, unfiltered menacing sounds. The term “Detroit Sludge” was coined by Marshall Applewhite in 2011, founder of the Yo Sucka! label and frequent contributor to tracks on How To Kill Records/Detroit, which is co-owned by Shady P and The Friend. The three have become infamous for Detroit Sludge nights, which have been gaining full speed in their local scene, and now being exported outside. With releases on Breed Records, Magnitizdat Tapes and How to Kill Records, the young Detroiter has a bright future that spans beyond just the norms of house and techno. In 2015, Shady P started releasing on his own imprint The Catholic Press. MAJORE T Genre hoping dark house/ebm/detroit techno selector from New York City. Yugoslavian born, Brooklyn based Maroje T wants to mess with your mind. His experimental, deep-groove driven sets are meant to make you dream and move. A DJ and producer with ten years of experience, Maroje's style can't be easily pigeonholed. Heavily influenced by metal and punk when growing up in socialist Europe, Maroje weaves his sets together through distorted drums and texture, moving seamlessly between dark house, techno, electro old and new, and classic Detroit sounds. Maroje is the founder of Remedy parties—carefully choreographed, intimate Brooklyn gatherings catering to the music heads as well as dance-floor. Remedy has hosted the likes of Zenker Brothers, Recondite, Claude Young, Eric Cloutier, Echospace, Patrick Russell and other innovative DJs and producers. DOUGLAS SHERMAN Douglas Sherman, of The Loft and Joy, has created a vinyl music event series titled “Adventures In Flight” that serves in part as a conduit for the collective vibration of music to reach the listener’s ear and inspire the dancer’s heart, creating an atmosphere where every record stands on its own and the music plays us. Join us for his next launch as he sets the controls for the heart of the Sun at Good Room. A Native New Yorker, Douglas is passionate about music and vinyl. In 1979, while studying graphic design at the School of Visual Arts, Douglas was invited to 99 Prince Street, the home of David Mancuso’s seminal Loft party. This experience profoundly changed his view of how music can unite people as participants in an emotional celebration of dance and love. He became a regular at The Loft parties and his interest became noticed by David when he showed up early and offered to lend a hand with set up. Douglas listened and learned Mancuso’s concepts and principles around social progress, music, audio and the ephemeral life of a party. His relationship with David and the Loft has lasted over 35 years and he continues to be an integral part in keeping the Loft legacy and its core principles alive. As a musical host, Douglas avoids playing from a set playlist in favor of constructing an aural tapestry that is emotional and transformative while always watching for the heart of the dancer to respond from the dance floor, to create a spontaneous and shared experience. He has gained a deep respect and appreciation for music and the importance of sound, to hear and experience records in the way that the artist intended.
