Berlin Atonal 2016 - Day 3

  • Berlin Atonal 2016 24.–28.08.2016 Berlin Atonal returns to its majestic permanent home at Kraftwerk Berlin for the fourth edition since its return in 2013. Projects from over 100 artists are being prepared for the 2016 iteration, including brand-new commissions, collaborations, world-premieres, one-off performances, installations and film art. The first release of names for Berlin Atonal 2016 includes a historical, world premiere Death In Vegas show. This specially conceived full audio-visual live performance unites psychedelic auteur Richard Fearless and artist and actress Sasha Grey over a love of Throbbing Gristle and Chris and Cosey. A long time in the making, this show - entitled Transmission - features all new experimental material, resonating across the soundscapes of visceral techno and unsettling, discordant drones, weaving a state of dreamlike euphoria. Drew McDowall (Coil, Psychic TV) also performs brand new material as part of a specially created live A/V show in another world premiere performance entitled Unnatural Channel, with a visual concept developed by Florence To. Imaginary Softwoods - the fabled and rarely heard kosmische/drone project from John Elliott (Emeralds, boss of Spectrum Spools) will play an uncommon live show. Roly Porter and MFO combine for a violently hallucinogenic total visual and sonic artwork - Third Law - based around material from Porter’s latest release on Tri Angle Records - a German premiere. These Hidden Hands (the collaboration between British artists Alain Paul and Tommy Four Seven) present the world premiere of their Aphelion A/V project, while Raime return from three years of deep, dedicated studio research with a newly conceived show with live drums to be shown for the first time in Germany. The festival has commissioned a brand new trio - Upper Glossa - consisting of Caterina Barbieri, Ellen Arkbro and Kali Malone, who will debut a new project entitled Fundament at Berlin Atonal 2016. A further new collaboration unites Jealous God artist-in-chief Silent Servant and New York via Berlin artist Phase Fatale. Fusing post-punk to darker, harder and industrial-influenced techno, this new live project combines rigid drumming, cold synths and bleak samples - the image of future war. Croatian Amor (Lust For Youth), Damien Dubrovnik, posh isolation) uses the occasion of Berlin Atonal to premiere a brand new live audio-visual show entitled Love Means Taking Action, while Pyrolator (from legendary post-punk band DAF) reworks material from seminal composer and concept artist Conrad Schnitzler (Tangerine Dream, Kluster) reinterpreting him as a pioneer of classic Berlin techno, in another premiere live A/V performance. Berlin Atonal 2016 will carry on last year’s addition of the raw and intense Stage Null to host shows in the Kraftwerk megacomplex after the performances on the iconic cathedral-like main stage, while adding a third room showcasing audio-visual projection art on a site-specific panoramic screen. OHM and Tresor are, as usual, also in the fold. This is just the first announcement, expect more surprises, world firsts and special projects in the two remaining artist releases.
