DJ Sprinkles / Switchst(d)Ance Invites Thomas Von Party

  • DJ SPRINKLES Writer, producer, actvist, speaker, educator, Comatose Recordings boss, Terre Thaemlitz is also DJ Sprinkles. A deep house heroine - in the literal sense of deep house: political, educational, liberating. Raised in Missouri, Thaemlitz started her path in the 80s, when disco and dance music were inextricably bound to queer culture. She used to play New York and New Jersey deep house in Manhattan's transgender clubs - gigs from which she was fired more than once for refusing to play hits by the divas du jour. Influenced by her degree in fine art and a parallel immersion in activism and gender politics, she started releasing her own music at the beginning of the 90s. To DJ Sprinkles, the vision of dance music as an apolitical, hedonistic space is wrong: the club is an educational place, where you can learn about gay culture, politics, society. Her music, just like her outlook as a DJ, aims to take house and the clubbing experience back to their queer roots. That is why, in her nearly twenty albums, she touches subjects like sexuality, race and class, leaving the idea of empty enjoyment behind - and she often does so in high heels and lipstick. The experience that DJ Sprinkles creates in a dancefloor is informed by all these philosophical and sonic vectors, resulting in an hypnotic journey, paved by deep and melodic tracks that are full of substance, seamlessly blended with the mastery of someone who's been behind the decks for over two decades - and punctuated by her secret remixes, exclusive to her sets. Nothing is left to chance here. The records that she makes and plays have an emancipatory intention: that's how you make history, and DJ Sprinkles never hesitated to be an agent of the transformation our world so desperately needs. Let's join her. - Inês Coutinho THOMAS VON PARTY What a wonderful name. Listen, it echoes. Von Party is pretty much a party omen, (still) reflecting the same lineage as his brother, Tiga, through his Turbo Recordings’ trace: a fearless label for which he stood as A&R, raising 'hit making releases', podcasts and powerful remixes one after the other - signed by heavy weight artists from the nouvelle decade, such as Azari & III, Gesaffeltein, Popof, Duke Dumont ... and himself, DJ by his very own right since 2006 . Ten years later, Von Party is a true chameleon considering the contemporary electronic music realm: his taste is made of many blends and rhythmic inclusions, middle eastern mainly, leaving no room for genre restrictions and forms. So maybe that’s why today he represents a delightful “all in one” in his DJ sets and appearances, somehow combining the sense of a perfect sunset in Goa, with that silly smile you keep from an after party, and making you take a deep dive into psychedelics scales that have that multicultural twist you must surrender to. So, in this alternative spectrum, he has been fuelling his Multi Culti label and duo, through exotic melodies, drum beats and deep electronics. All done in shared custody with Angus Gruzman 'aka' Dreems, with whom he keeps partying as hell, and proudly teaming up with talents such as Auntie Flo, Red Axes or Jagwar Ma as label signees. So, yes. Von Party echoes to us very well. And that's what we'll remember. - Ana Sofia Castanho
