With the crepuscule of summer, comes the time to store it´s memories in the corners of our mind. Days get shorter, temperatures fall, shadows grow. From these shadows, encouraged by the increasing darkness, figures emerge, thus creating the perfect context for a character like Shifted to make an appearance at Santa Apolónia.
Admittedly that may sound a bit gloomy, but until recently, it would be the perfect intro to talk about Guy Brewer and his work. Things change, and change is the essence of what Shifted does. For starters, we now know his name, which was a secret since he first appeared on the techno scene in 2011, with 2 EPs on Luke Slater´s Mote-Evolver. As a way of distancing himself from possible erroneous interpretations of his work as a member of drum´n´bass trio Commix, Shifted presented himself as a character as ghostly and mutant as a lot of his productions. Further cementing ideas on his Avian label and albums on Mote-Evolver and Vatican Shadow´s Bed Of Nails, Brewer finally made himself known, at a time when he was already considered a practitioner par excellence of modern techno, somber, economical yet incredibly accomplished in it´s details and textures, full of industrial, noise and experimental influences. Confortable in his own skin and a target of a growing cult which has converted the most suspicious, Shifted is now on the verge of releasing a new LP, ‘Appropriation Stories’, whose promo tour now comes to Lux. The title itself seems like a somewhat sarcastic aside to those who in the past accused him of jumping on a bandwagon, and it even dares to mix some breakbeats into his permanently progressist vision of techno.
We risk saying that Brewer seems now like a happier, looser and more accessible guy. An artist at the top of his maturity and identity. The timing of his visit is, then, perfect. As our days and nights assume new shapes and tonalities, Shifted comes to tell us that life is made of change, transformation, and the balls to carry them out. Just like in autumn, when every leaf is a flower, with Shifted, every beat can be a story.
