Marcel Fengler

  • Let´s do some role-playing. Imagine yourselves as a successful DJ, with a long-term residence at the most famous techno club in the world. Beyond that, you spend your weekends travelling the world for gigs, due in part to you being in the roster of that club´s associated agency. As a producer, you´ve built a solid discography, which is recognized by critics and public, most of it having been released in that same club/agency´s record label. You could say you´re living the dream of many aspiring DJs and producers. Now imagine letting go of all of that, and going for a fresh start, by yourself, in search of defining your own identity, your art, away from comparisons or labelling. That´s what Marcel Fengler did in early 2016, by leaving his residency of more than 10 years at Berghain, and Ostgut´s roster. Some will applaud the courage and the risk of such a decision, others may call it crazy, but Fengler´s fans were not totally surprised. The frequent presence of celestial melodies and seductive textures in his music, the elasticity and musicality of his sets, the disconcerting mix of sheer intensity and hypnotism which never forgets about groove, which we hear in him, had been setting him apart from much of the Ostgut family for a while now. So Fengler thought it was time to forge hiw own path and earn whatever was due, because of what he is, and not because of who he was associated with. His label label IMF (Index Marcel Fengler) is, so far, the most visible trait of Marcel´s “reset”, and right from his first post-Ostgut release, the ‘Kyu’ EP, he made a point of describing it a record appropriate to be listened to at the club or while pruning your bonsai. And frankly, it´s a such a good record, that even if you don´t have a bonsai, you´ll want to get one afterwards. But most of all, what we take away from Fengler´s art, is the notion that passion and fun have always been his driving forces. The notion that if a special idea grows too much and becomes a trend, it becomes normal, and you need people with new ideas. That in music, the leaders are usually the guys who choose the hardest and most solitary ways. But it´s their own way. And Marcel Fengler´s way is definitely a way to somewhere new, that we truly wish to find. - Nuno Mendonça
