끊임없는 혁신을 추구하며 타협을 거부하는 사운드를 지향하는 댄스음악의 아이콘 A Guy Called Gerald. 그는 80년대 후반 애시드 하우스라는 장르를 내세우며 솔로로는 앨범 ’Voodoo Ray’ 를 발매하고, 영국의 일렉트로닉 트리오 808 State의 멤버로도 활동하며 유럽 씬에 등장하게된다. A Guy Called Gerald는 지난 25년간 약 아홉개의 앨범을 발매할 뿐만 아니라, 세계 각지를 돌아다니며 진정한 의미가 담긴 그만의 음악을 선보여왔다.
A Guy Called Gerald는 David Bowie, The Stone Roses등 수많은 유명 뮤지션들의 곡을 리믹스 해왔지만, 그가 가진 역량을 가장 잘 드러내는 형태의 음악은 역시 본인만의 자작곡이라고 할 수 있다. 영국 댄스음악의 기반을 다져왔다고 해도 과언이 아닐 A Guy Called Gerald의 실력은 이미 스튜디오 내에서는 물론이고 클럽 내에서도 라이브 퍼포먼스를 통하여 그 힘을 발휘한다.
2012년부터는 808 State의 현 멤버이기도 한 그라함 마세이(Graham Massey)와 함께 ‘Rebuild’ 라는 라이브 프로젝트로도 활동하기 시작하며 이탈리아의 테크노 레이블 Bosconi에 앨범 ‘How Long Is Now’ 를 발매했다. 2013년에는 스피커 회사 및 재즈 레이블인 Bowers & Wilkins와 피터 가브리엘(Peter Gabriel)의 음악 레이블 Real World Studio와 함께 협업하며, 50분간의 미니멀 테크노, 앰비언트와 같은 실험적인 사운드로 구성된 라이브 앨범 ‘Silent Sound Spread Spectrum’ 을 발매하기도 하였다.
2016년에 들어서도 세계 무대에서 여전히 활발하게 활동하는 그는 라이브 세션을 바탕으로 초기 애시드 하우스부터 시작해 추상적인 테크 하우스 풍의 브레이크 비트를 초현실적이면서도 미래지향적인 진동음과 결합시켜 그가 지금까지 해왔던 장르들을 자유자재로 선보이고 있다. 올해 역시 기존의 레코딩에서 3차원 적인 방향감을 정확도있게 연출해내는 펑션 원(Funktion One) 사운드가 구축된 글래스톤베리(Glastonbury) 축제에서도 공연할 예정이다.
내년 중순에는 스튜디오에서 꾸준히 만든 작업물을 그가 직접 운영하는 디지털 레이블에 발매할 예정이다.
“나에게 음악이란 요즘의 유행과 같은 아날로그 장비나 레코드에 대한 집착보다는 단순히 있는 그대로 솔직하게 ‘진정한 유파(True School)’ 로서의 음악을 사람들에게 전달하는게 유일한 목적이다. 유감스러운 말일지도 모르겠지만 여전히 사람들은 퇴보적인 무언가에 정체되어 있는 것 같고, 그렇기 때문에 내 자신은 계속 앞으로 전진한다고 생각한다. 아마 그들에게는 이러한 틀을 벗어나야 할 무언가가 필요한게 아닐까? 나는 소리에 관해서는 좀처럼 타협할 수 없는 인간이다. 댄스음악 내에서는 나만의 원칙을 버릴 수 없기 때문에 그 안에서는 오직 나만이 존재하고, 바로 이것이 ‘진정한 유파’인 것이다.”

An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. A Guy Called Gerald kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy with his ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and 'Pacific State' (as part of 808 State) and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass. Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music touring worldwide bringing his "true school" flavour to a world overloaded with pop pap.
Although his remixes are relatively enviable including the likes of David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, Black Uhuru, Finley Quaye, Lamb, Tricky and The Stone Roses, it is Gerald’s own productions and refusal to plough anyone’s furrow but his own which has marked him out. A Guy Called Gerald is responsible for the birth of British dance music as you know it today and continues to explore what is possible both in the studio and in the club with his "Live in Session" performances.
Since 2012 he has been working on a side project with Graham Massey (808 State) called REBUILD performing live jams on the Roland machines. “How Long Is Now” was released on Bosconi Records in 2012. A live album Silent Sound Spread Spectrum followed from the Society of Sound Series – a collaboration between Bowers & Wilkins and Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in 2013.
In 2016 he continues to be in demand worldwide with his Live In Session shows using a vast patchwork of past, present and future experimenting effortlessly between early acid house through abstract tech breaks into dreamscapes of futuristic oscillations. At Glastonbury Festival this year he will be performing with Funktion One’s Ambisonic Experimental system – a six stack Ambisonic full-sphere surround sound technique that is ‘capable of recreating accurate three- dimensional sound stages from original recordings’.
In the studio he is busy recording a steady stream of releases on his own digital label and a new album due out in mid 2017.
"I have decided the only way to give music to the people is raw and straight from the true school. I don't have to hide behind any trend or gimmicks. ie. analogue equipment and vinyl fetishism. I'm sorry to say but I still feel like I'm blazing the way forward only because everyone seems to be stuck in "retrogression" mode. Maybe they need a stop / start to get them out of the loop? I refuse to compromise when it comes to my sound. I realised that I'm the only real deal within dance music when I found it was impossible for me to sell out. This is the True School."
