Bónusz is like the Time Warp of Budapest: one day, one gigantic venue (Hungexpo Budapest, an indoor space with room for 15,000 people), and a heaving cast of house and techno heavyweights. It's a formula that's as simple as it is effective, and it suits this bill to a T: is there a better way to see the likes of Carl Cox, Dubfire and Ida Engberg really bang it out? There's a lot to be said for massive, no-frills mega-raves, and in October you certainly won't do any better than Bónusz.

9. VIA Festival

VIA has been one of our favorites since they debuted back in 2010, and they've gone from strength to strength ever since. The annual event describes itself as a music and "new media" festival, and they mean it—almost every musician or DJ is paired with a visual artist to enhance their sets. Sprawling out over six days and eight venues, the program gives you everything from Jimmy Edgar's wiggly funk to the noise pyrotechnics of Pharmakon and the controversial rap of Chief Keef. It's well-timed, too: VIA's steady expansion comes with renewed interest in the City Of Bridges, thanks to a resurgent club scene and artists like Pittsburgh Track Authority.

08. Corona Capital Festival

Music fans of all stripes can get their groove on in Mexico City this October: Savages for the über-hip, Fun. for the pop kids, even Blondie and the Breeders for punters of a certain age. But Corona Capital Festival, now in its fourth year at the Curva 4 del Autódromo Hermános Rodríguez racetrack, looks especially good for those who want to dance. With the likes of Jamie xx, DJ Harvey, John Talabot and Nguzunguzu, there will be plenty of chances to bust a move.

07. Treasure Island Music Festival

How many festivals take over an entire island? Treasure Island sets up shop on the former naval base just northeast of San Francisco for two days. Among the attractions on the manmade isle are a ridiculously tall ferris wheel, art installations and performance artists that roam around the site—and, of course, music. The festival continues its balancing act between indie and electronic this year, offering up names like Atoms For Peace, Disclosure and Japandroids to make sure you get your fill of silky house beats as well as big crunchy guitars.

06. Movement Torino

"Movement" might immediately make you think of Detroit's Hart Plaza. But each October, the name points to Torino, where the Michigan institution's sister festival rounds up some of the main players in underground electronic music. The D is certainly well-represented, with Derrick May, Seth Troxler, and Omar-S all jetting into the Piedmontese capital. They'll be in good company, with top selectors like DVS1, Blawan, Laurent Garnier and Ben Klock lending the festival some international flair. And making good on its name, Movement stays mobile across Torino, filling out a range of venues to keep things fresh.

RA pick: Omar-S is known for just doing his thing, and we suggest you make a point of seeing that.

05. Elevate Festival

The first thing you usually hear about Elevate is its location, Dom Im Berg, which is built into a hill in the heart of the Austrian city Graz. It's an arresting venue, for sure: the stairs that ascend the side of the hill make it look like an ant colony viewed from a glass cabinet. Carved within you'll find several intimate venues, the most memorable of which is at the very top, where DJs play in a small, gravelly cave. Inside, the focus is on left-of-centre dance music, with Peverelist, Powell, Vakula and a solid L.I.E.S. contingent—Delroy Edwards, XOSAR and Ron Morelli—all locked in this year.

04. Robot Festival

Now in its sixth year, Robot Festival descends on the Italian city of Bologna every October with a gaggle of house and techno artists in tow, plus a healthy smattering of experimental acts. Cosmin TRG, Pantha Du Prince, Seth Troxler, Tim Hecker and Tropic Of Cancer are just some of the acts confirmed for this year's edition. The four-night programme hits a few different locations, including two that are centuries old: Teatro Comunale and Palazzo Re Enzo. Talk about timeless.

03. Simple Things

Bristol is known more for its thriving house and bass scene than for any festivals that call it home, but Simple Things are set to change that. The third edition is shaping up to be a big one, with 60 acts confirmed across ten stages around the city. The lineup runs the gamut from big names like Nicolas Jaar and Moderat to local acts like Hyetal and Outboxx, keeping the heads grooving right through till 6 AM.

RA pick: Soak up Dopplereffekt's proto-electro at what will be a rare Bristol appearance.

02. Unsound
October 13 - October 20

After a festival titled "The End," the question begs to be asked: what next? Luckily, Unsound are never short on ideas. This year the Polish festival returns with a new overarching concept, "Interference," seemingly a nod to the kind of scuzzy, lo-fi experimentalism the weeklong festival embraces. With the White Material crew, Golden Pudel resident Helena Hauff and Anthony Naples onboard, Unsound 2013 is at the pointy end of things as far as blossoming talent is concerned, though there's room for old hands like Regis and Underground Resistance. A couple of festival regulars return as well, with Demdike Stare and Andy Stott teaming up for an all-hardware performance.

RA pick: The White Material stable—Galcher Lustwerk, DJ Richard and Young Male—have been enjoying a breakthrough year in 2013, and their label showcase should attract plenty of inquisitive souls.

01. Amsterdam Dance Event

Reading the ADE lineup is like drinking from a firehose. With around 1,700 artists playing in total, the program for the annual event pretty much defies synopsis. You can name a few highlights if you want—Objekt, Prosumer, Mathew Jonson, Ricardo Villalobos, I-F, Dave Clarke—but even a list triple that length would just be a drop in the ocean. The bottom line is, Amsterdam Dance Event is one of biggest gatherings of electronic music, anywhere, all year. What's amazing is that it still manages to feel friendly and intimate, thanks in no small part to the city itself. Strolling down a canal from one killer party to the next, it's obvious why ADE is our #1 for October year after year.
