- The London label is seeking demos for its no-frills dance floor series.
London's Night Slugs has launched the Club Constructions Community, and called on producers to submit demos to their stripped-back, dance floor-focused series of the same name.
"Night Slugs has until now been something of a closed circle, but we are opening up in the name of community, something we feel is lacking from our increasingly partizan music scene," the label says. "We are doing this by publishing the criteria for what makes a Club Construction, and making an open invitation to contribute."
The Club Constructions series began in 2012, operating in parallel with the regular Night Slugs output. To date there have been releases from Night Slugs co-founder L-Vis 1990 as well as Lil Silva, Jam City, Hysterics, KW Griff and Helix. Though the sound of each release has varied, they've been united by their no-frills, functional style and dance floor focus.
Now the label is calling on demos from anyone who fancies their chances. "This is not a contest or a PR stunt," they add. "This is a genuine reaction to the way the CC series has developed, the music around us and the demos we receive. This is an attempt to share some of the label's culture." In an interview with Thump, L-Vis 1990 added: "We really want to inspire a new generation of club producers and give them pointers along the way."
Night Slugs also issued a Club Constructions manifesto, so producers know what's required of them:
"Tracks are as raw and stripped back as possible, built around one simple idea
Production is gritty and driven. Saturation is encouraged
No melody (3 notes or less)
Tracks are stripped of emotive artefacts, they are not for escapism. They are grounded in the club
Reverb, FX and sound design reflect their environment: small, dark basements or warehouses. Short reverbs are encouraged.
Vocals or vocal samples to be used only if INTEGRAL."
