- Footnotes is screening every night from July 13th through September 16th.
Footwork is taking up a giant space in Downtown Chicago.
As part of the city's Year Of Chicago Music project, the Department Of Cultural And Special Events has teamed up with Art On TheMart, a public art initiative, to project videos onto Merchandise Mart, a huge Art Deco building home to shops, offices and showrooms.
First up in the three-film series is Footnotes, a short animation on the footwork music genre and dance style born in the Windy City. The video is being screened from 9 PM to 9:30 PM local time every evening from July 13th through September 16th.
Footwork dancers and musicians based on the West and South Sides are the focus of the animation, which includes music contributions from footwork pioneer DJ Spinn, Angel Bat Dawid and the Chicago Bucket Boys. The film's soundtrack will play through speakers along the Chicago Riverwalk.
Documentary filmmaker and scholar Wills Glasspiegel collaborated with footwork dancer and animator Brandon Calhoun for the film. Read more about the project in the New York Times.
