Fhloston Paradigm - Cosmosis Vol. 1

  • King Britt's Fhloston Paradigm project reached a wider audience in 2012, when it debuted on Hyperdub. The conceit—to pair hardware-made electronic music with B-movie sci-fi themes—was hardly new, but the execution was. Perhaps it was Britt's deft drum programming or his refined melodic sense. Whatever the reason, he created a world distinctively his own. An album followed, fleshing out Britt's vision in a less impressive way (the vocal spots were a bit much). This follow-up EP gets back to basics. The ingredients are similar to that first EP: there's a spacey techno jam ("Sonic Six") led by the same sort of poised drum loops that powered "Chasing Rainbows," as well as a couple of ambient numbers. If anything, though, Cosmosis Vol. 1 is even better than its predecessor. The atmospheres are richer and more colourful, the structures more compelling. Britt particularly excels on the beatless tracks. The 12-minute "Faith" shimmers patiently like star formations in the emptiness of space. "Past" is less serene, but its burbling textures are eventually brought into line by a rich, sweeping bassline.
