- Unlike many of the other experimentally-inclined imprints born in the mid-'90s that have since fallen by the wayside, Raster-Noton's current standing as a true powerhouse has been built on a mixture of consistency and sonic risk taking—both of which are key ingredients for the Berlin-based imprint's latest effort, Kyoka's iSH.
When viewed as a part of Raster-Noton's wider output, iSH's most blatant point of difference—from its opening moments, at least—is its accessibility. A distinct 4/4 pulse is plastered across the variations (the original and AtomTM's rework) of the release's standout, "HADue," both of which are as floor-ready as they are adventurous. They're undoubtedly techno, though with enough experimentation—stuttered percussion and disfigured vocals are looped and piled upon each other until they reach an abrupt and satisfying climax—to render them as standout club tools. The markedly more leftfield "YESACLOUDui," "23 iSH" and "ROOMOne" then take the release through to a close, each coupling heavy syncopation with a lack of regard for conventional structure, supplying a welcomed contrast to the club-friendly appeal of their counterparts.
