Jesse Perez - Jesse Don't Sport No Jerri Curl

  • We're pretty sure that Jesse Perez has his tongue firmly in his cheek. Or perhaps—if his RA biog is anything to go by—in between someone else's. How else to explain tracks in his canon like "This Hoe Gonna Get Some Dick"? Part Armand Van Helden, part Ron Jeremy, the Miami-based porn star (allegedly)-turned-DJ has been snapped up by Hot Creations to deliver some swinging Floridian ghetto funk to pasty-faced Europeans—although we're damned sure that "Jesse Don't Sport No Jerri Curl" is little more than an amalgam of Doug Lazy's 1989 hip-house classic, "Let It Roll," and Sugar Bear's "Don't Scandalize Mine." There's no denying "Jerri Curl" is fizzing with energy, but hip-house's first coming was a short-lived phenomenon for a good reason. It was mostly pretty arse. "Dejen De Comer Tanta Pinga" (Spanish is not my forte, but I think it means "Stop Eating So Much Dick"), is infinitely more palatable, despite the name. Spinning around a marching bass loop, a baritone voice repeats the title between a compressed synth squelch and the thunk of the cowbell. It proves that behind the one-track mind and potty mouth, there is something to work with here.
