Guy Andrews - The Wait

  • It seems like every week there's a new name in bass music we're supposed to be excited about, and when Guy Andrews debuted on Untold's usually consistent Hemlock imprint, it seemed like he was another. But something about his tracks seemed a little anemic, overstuffed with percussion but lacking an imperative visceral impact. The Brighton producer is making another debut, this time on Scuba's Hotflush, where he confidently addresses the issue. "The Wait" packs a decade's worth of bass music into one track. From the beginning it swells, looming synth clouds set against the woodblocks he seems to love so much. It's gutted from below by a nasty ascending riff, sharing a scuffed, rusty quality with the most aggressive of dubstep LFO sounds. When the whole thing is given an anthemic push by big-room chords and a jerky arpeggio, it's a bustling mass of heaving music with percussive limbs pointing out from the fray in every direction, physically impressive and completely overwhelming. The flipside "Hands In Mine" is a little more in line with the subtlety of his Hemlock debut, but it's also ensconced in an echo chamber of gabardine synth, before it too drops in and out of a blistering section full of brutally pounding kick drums. While Andrews is still working with a palette of sounds and textures he's yet to make entirely his own, the way he stitches together his patchwork here is captivating to say the least.
