- Milo Smee, along with his brother Leo, is a founding member of doom-disco ensemble Chrome Hoof, a band which thrives on an ambitious commingling of dance floor opulence and the oppressive trappings of doom metal. Smee's solo production dates back to the '90s, with releases as Kruton and Binary Chaffinch outlining a sleazy yet often confrontational strand of machine funk. Perhaps, then, the binding agent of Smee's musical activities is that strange intersection between eroticism and danger; the moment when the floor takes a turn for the dark side and the fight-or-flight response kicks in.
That certainly seems to be the case with the Bintus project, an exercise in rambunctious acid and electro revivalism which may not be earth-shatteringly original but manages, through sheer steroid-pumped aggression, to sound as if beamed in from the near future. "Point Counter Point" is B-movie horror material, its whipcrack electro backbone playing host to dissonant harp figures and bell-like chords that leap around the frequencies in deranged fashion; a blend that's simultaneously comical and terrifying. "Drink Ye from the Acid Chalice," meanwhile, is the requisite acid number. No tired retreads here though: rarely has a 303 line sounded so menacingly dank, as if it's some abominable creature encountered at close quarters in a sewer system, wading tirelessly through the muck towards its luckless prey.
