Jam City - Club Constructions Vol. 6

  • The premise of Night Slugs' Club Constructions series is simple: invite artists on the Night Slugs and Fade To Mind rosters to produce tracks primed for club use. Club Constructions convincingly demonstrates that a DJ tool needn't be an artless transitional track. Take Helix's "Whoosh Ice Dispenser" from Vol. 4 of the series. Functionality notwithstanding, its tough percussive assault remains one of the best things the label's released. Though of course Jam City's Club Constructions contribution is a different proposition from Classical Curves, its five tracks still have that album's highly stylised amalgam of sounds, from industrial, grime and house to sci-fi soundtracks, funk and jazz. "Melty Valve" is so gleaming it sounds like it's been moulded rather than constructed. "500 Years" works outwards from two chords and a whip-crack snare pattern, layering them and a driving kick with a constellation of cheap-sounding soft synths and strangled vocals. "The Raven" is one of the odder tracks, stacking stuttering vocal samples and synths over a spacious, eerie beat. "Worst Illusion" fleshes out a no-nonsense bouncing rhythm with spookily reverberating strings and whispers. For a collection of functional tracks, Club Constructions Vol. 6 is wonderfully oddball.
