- With his addictive and wonderfully melodic debut LP, Drone Logic, Daniel Avery made obvious signifiers sound fresh. With a sharp eye for detail and a keen sense of emotional pacing, he knows when "just enough" becomes "too much." For the second set of remixes from the album, neither KiNK nor Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve (AKA Erol Alkan and Richard Norris) manage this balancing act quite as well.
Kink eschews his usual diversionary tactics on "Knowing We'll Be Here," beginning at a plateau and not ascending from there. He generates a cheery mood with starry arpeggios and a cooing female vocal (The Chemical Brothers' work with Beth Orton seems to be an influence), but the effect doesn't stick. For their "Re-Animation" of "New Energy," Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve opt for delayed gratification, revelling in a long crescendo before dropping some rough electro. Unfortunately, the fun is short-lived. Both remixes are tasteful and faithful to Avery's more exciting originals, but that's the extent of the compliments due.
