- Cabaret Recordings is a Japanese label run by So Inagawa and DJ Masda. Its output ranges from Binh's and U-More's sinuous interpretations of minimal to Inagawa's well-pruned deep house, all ingrained with a precision and sheen that's helped the label to garner a decent following in Europe and elsewhere. Likewise, the US-born Evan Baggs has been steadily gaining traction over the past few years as a regular fixture on the Berlin scene, where he's made a name for himself as a gifted DJ. Enlisted here for his second solo release, Baggs presents three compelling cuts of bass-heavy minimal house.
"Not A Story" is queasy in a way that's suited to early warm-up or afterhours. It lets aqueous synths wash over a stepping kick drum and pitched-down claps. "Blossom" is the record's focal point, a tripped-out banger that sounds tailor-made for one of Baggs' DJ sets. The whole thing glistens with paranoid urgency, its chest-rattling percussion pumping away alongside whispered intonations and lurching bass stabs. "Ziegensicher" stitches skipping, Thomas Melchior-style drums to more of those anxiety-inducing atmospheres. The surplus of bass pressure marks it as a far more robust DJ tool than the title track, however, and it rounds out a very promising label debut.
