Florian Kupfer - Unfinished

  • If Florian Kupfer's last record was a foray into bleak extremism, his follow-up for Technicolour is a lot more gaudy. "Elle" sets the mood with a Latin rock riff that sprawls into the track's warm lyrical backbone. It's backed by an arsenal of lo-fi drums—splintering hi-hats, a thudding bass punch—that gives the track's sunniness a shadowy underbelly. Something similar happens on "Being Me": calypso drums provide the melody and sun-kissed setting, while an abrasive set of drums claws away at it. The opposing dark and light elements established in "Elle" are tearing themselves apart on "Being Me." There's a crescendo through a screeching cacophony, and a trite organ whistling its wearied tune. "Erika" is another brokedown machine track, featuring an R&B vocal sample and sparse woodblocks to break up the monotone knob-twiddling. Without those sounds, the eight-odd-minute jam would feel like a slog—as is, it's only bordering on tedious. Ironically, "Unfinished" is the most polished track. It's a haunted, misty ambient number with wailing lost souls that set the mood as submerged chords push us through its well-crafted arrangement. It's a lot easier on the ears, showcasing an orderliness that Unfinished could've used more of.
