Serge Devant - White Groove

  • Until relatively recently, the Russian-born, New York-based Serge Devant was known as a progressive house and trance producer, turning out big-room EDM tracks that include a Tiësto-supported cover of New Order's "True Faith." In 2015 he released a single on the Crosstown Rebels sub-label Rebellion, and the following year put out the memorable "Always On My Mind" on Crosstown Rebels proper, backed with a beautiful remix from Kornél Kovács. Devant has continued to hone that label's swaggering afterhours sound, and with "White Groove" his transition is complete. All echoed voice samples, shuffling beats and low-end warping, it's his most DC-10-ready track yet, made for people packed sardine-like into clubs—not dancing, but swaying. "Connect To Server" keeps the shades on and the mood hazy with a hip-moving bassline and trippy synths, while Archie Hamilton's "White Groove" remix cranks the pace (there's no swaying to this one) by adding a thumping beat, rubbery bassline and effective breakdown. It's livelier than the original but Devant's version has more sass.
