- EBM meets acid techno on this promising debut.
- There's been a lot of talk about EBM's renaissance, with artists like Phase Fatale, Tzusing and Schwefelgelb being hailed as the genre's future. VTSS, the Brutaż resident DJ and live artist, could be a worthy addition to that list. Last year, she made her live debut as TRY at Krakow's Unsound Festival, where she delivered a performance of slow, dark ambience that stripped EBM down to a beatless onslaught of noise.
But Self Will, VTSS's first EP, is better suited to a club setting. All four tracks are intense and in-your-face, blistering acid techno tunes that gallop at full speed. The title track goes so fast that it barely touches the ground, the 303 burning itself up with electric ferocity. "Linked" and "Versatility" call to mind VTSS's EBM contemporaries in the way their snares' sharp slap cuts through the heavily warped synth lines. "Fruition" best highlights how VTSS merges EBM with acid techno. You can also hear a bright, wispy melody through the charge.
