- The rising Irish producer gets remixed by DeFeKT and Shanti Celeste.
- Cromby's recent Futurola EP moved to raw techno, breaking away from his earlier house-focused release for Berlin's Tenderpark label. The atmospheric pads and vocal samples were still there but reduced, as Cromby cut away the fat to further highlight the robust beats that keep his tracks interesting.
Released through Feel My Bicep, Retribution also highlights the crisp but textured side of Cromby's sound. On the title track, the kick and hi-hats chug while syncopated claps and a crunchy square wave surge around the groove. It's a slow-build of crafty samples that never quite peaks, instead rising in waves before dropping out. This persistent movement makes it a strong dance floor track.
DeFeKT adds a crunchy hardware sound to his electro remix, which is unrecognisable from the original. Given DeFeKT has the robot pop covered, Shanti Celeste dials back her usually banging style with her "Chill Mix." She teases and softens the damper parts of Cromby's original to produce a trippy, subaqueous contrast to DeFeKT's electro maximalism. It's as if the two tracks were spliced from the same cell of the original, its strengths and possibilities realised in polar opposites.
