Rebūke - Along Came Polly

  • The '00s tech house revival we didn't need.

  • Hot Creations is on a retro streak. First there was Paul Woolfood's House Hits Vol. 1, a high-impact EP that brought classic house to big rooms. Now there's Along Came Polly from Rebūke, which, with almost 500,000 plays on Spotify and a spot at the top of the Beatport charts, is Hot Creations' biggest track in a while. It channels the sound of mid-'00s tech house and minimal, an era in which bleeps, blops and massive basslines made crowds at DC-10 lose their minds. But did we really need to revisit a time of laptop DJs and white noise? Even within that style, "Along Came Polly," paired here with a cheery disco-house track called "Rolo," is fairly rudimentary. It's built around driving low-end and ratcheting bleeps, which skim across the track as the groove churns below. The clap is loud and the breakdown is massive, which ensures that it's right for big rooms. But artists like Audion, Martin Buttrich and Radio Slave approached this sound more creatively ten years ago. DJs would be better off going straight to the source.
