- Suzanne Kraft and Jonny Nash get back in the studio.
- MATstudio is the sound of Suzanne Kraft and Jonny Nash messing around in their Amsterdam studio. The project's first record, released a few months ago, was abstract and psychedelic, sometimes bordering on deranged. It was a surprising departure from the duo's more serene approach.
MATstudio 2 sounds a little more like Nash and Kraft. Where the first record felt like a collection of experimental sketches, here there's a sense of narrative. On "Maybe This Is Something You Should Think About," absent-minded guitar strokes are layered on top of echoey noises. After what seems like forever, crunchy percussion fades into the picture, building to a climax before collapsing into ambient rumblings.
"The Perishable Imagination" starts in a similar way. It evolves into something less graspable, but more profound. There's a nice insight into the two musician's collaborative flow, as feedback-heavy guitar combines with groaning hardware noise and high-pitched drones. There's less of the wild, experimental energy of the first record, but they've kept the same freedom and rawness, bringing a satisfying coherence that was missing the first time around.
