Closet Yi - Sonder

  • Slippery breakbeats blossom into beauty on the standout track from Peggy Gou's first label compilation.

  • Although the dance floor intelligentsia love to dunk on Peggy Gou and the selfie-taking masses that surround her, she's become one of the most in-demand DJs in the world for a reason: she has good taste. Case-in-point is the first Various Artist compilation on her Gudu label, which has everything from the wonky electro of DMX Krew to the wonderfully serene soundscapes of Salamanda. My favorite track comes from rising Korean producer Closet Yi. Closing out the LP, "Sonder" feels like watching a free climber look for their next handhold while dangling off a cliff. The panning vocals deteriorate as they move across the stereo field while a minor key melody keeps the tension high. The rolling breakbeat underneath is just as choppy before the wondrous arpeggio erupts in the song's final third, providing the track with the closure of finally reaching the summit.
