- London rapper Novelist has been on a club music binge as of late. From his house music debut in 2020 ("We Are One") to collaborations with Mall Grab ("Times Change"), Skee Mask and DJ Lag ("Bulldozer"), it's clear the MC and producer is looking to expand his horizons. His most recent foray into the club circuit arrives in the form of a Special Request collaboration on Peggy Gou's label, and it's as exciting as you'd expect.
Novelist's party-starting vocals on top of Paul Woolford's garage-influenced production is compelling enough, but the real highlight is the breakdown at the halfway mark. A sudden tempo change and slowed-down drums add a dubby feel to what is otherwise a perky, peak-time cut—it's the kind of surprise that creates a conversation between dancer and DJ. Woolford whips up a frenetic bassline that acts as another surprise before bringing back Novelist's verse. The whole track is a wild ride that toys with adrenaline and tension to riotous effect.
