Gerd - For 12 Minutes She Danced with an Alien

  • Dutch producer Gerd-Jan Bijl is having an odd kind of renaissance. In addition to the well-received "Friendly Fire," his early 2009 track "1 in the Morning" was recently remixed by DJ Koze, and now there's "For 12 Minutes She Danced With an Alien," a 1995 B-side (on an equally wonderfully named label, Beam Me Up!) that Joris Voorn has resurrected with a mix from himself on the B-side and Gerd's own re-rub on the A. It couldn't happen to a nicer record. Both sides are tremendous, but neither feels particularly pushy. Voorn's flickering, judiciously used envelope-filter stunt-work at the end fits the track's dreamlike quality rather than attempting to force it into hands-in-air anthem-hood. Instead, this is the kind of track that slips into the listener's life off the floor as easily as it does on it. Gerd's 2010 Re-Mix is more straightforwardly house, a simple keyboard ostinato, Latin-tinged percussion touches and modest, endless crest; Voorn's Ruff Mix is more three-dimensional and tinged with yearning. Extra points to both for having properly climactic finishes, too; Voorn's is sneakier, but play it all the way through—it's there.
