Julio Bashmore - Father Father

  • If house, UK Funky, techno and disco could moan about their relationship with Julio Bashmore on a reality show, they'd probably say the man has a major fear of commitment. At the very least they'd confess to how used they feel at the hands of this Bristol-based producer. He's spent the past year-and-a-half dipping his beak into a myriad number of electronic styles, taking what he wants for his own means before casting them aside and moving onto his next dalliance. Bristol's Future Boogie is the latest imprint to have its heart broken by the 23 year-old—and this time he opts to take a tour of Chicago, albeit one kissed by bright, soulful sunshine. "Father Father" features the gospel vocals of Javeon McCarthy, a fellow whose croon was wrapped around the warped boogie of L-Vis 1990's "Forever You." It's a golden slice of life-affirming deep house with a ticking hi-hat time bomb locked within it. And while that's perhaps more straight-laced than previous outings from Bashmore, it makes up for what it lacks in raw innovation via a heart of neo-soul. Elsewhere, "Craboon" is more of a shuffling workout for the back rooms, plumbing much weirder depths than the main attraction. A handful of releases in, and Bashmore is proving to be a dab hand at dancing with many an electronic mistress.
