About

  • European Centre for the Arts Hellerau... Designed as an avantgarde theatre building and "Institute for Music and Rhythmics" by Heinrich Tessenow in 1911, Hellerau is bound to become a laboratory for the intellectual and creative elite of today and tomorrow! Drawing from the whole range of Contemporary Arts, and from an impressive Hellerau tradition, the Centre feels itself firmly rooted in current avantgarde, at the heart of New Europe, where the East and the West meet. And there is good reason for this. Between 1912 and 1915, the whole of pre-war cultural elite met here; Hellerau residents designer Adolphe Appia and dancer Emile Jaques-Dalcroze inspired, an co-operated with writer George Bernard Shaw, choreographer Diaghilev, theatre director Max Reinhardt, architect van de Velde, the painter Kokoschka, authors Hauptmann or Werfel, and composers such as Milhaud or Stravinsky. To understand, and adapt, this tradition through the eyes of the 21st century is what drives European Centre for the Arts Hellerau. Be it the internationally acclaimed Dresden Days of Contemporary Music, media arts festival CYNETart, or American choreographer William Forsythe who will join us from 2005/06 season Hellerau will offer a unique place for what is the artists' answer to the challenges of con- temporary society.
