- Leeds/London born electronic music producers Ryan Wild aka J.Sparrow and Dom Howard of Submotion Orchestra, first teamed up as Author back in 2011.Their self-titled LP presented a more reflective and jazz-inflected sound than their solo work, which a Residents Advisor review at the time called "comfortably conservative yet experimental." Author’s sophomore release “Forward Forever”, released through Navy Cut in August 2018, reportedly presents a more organic and lifelike sound. Like the first time around, the record boasts a number of guest spots, including UK MCs Jehst & Rider Shafique, reggae singer Dan Man & drum & bass outfit June Miller. One guest musician who requires a specific mention is Submotion Orchestra's Simon Beddoe, whose illuminating contribution of Jazz improvisation has become an essential part of Author's production as well as an integral part of their live shows. “Take The Bridge Home” showcases this perfectly, offering moments where brass steps out from behind intricate percussion and deep, subby bass to create an atmosphere of its own, enhancing the sound without ever overstepping the mark. Author are at their brightest and most cinematic in tracks like “Keep Moving” and “Innovate” as provocative lyrics and emotive live instrumentation push for an emotional response. Combining Gil Scott Heron with that unmistakeably Author-style beat, Beddoe's brass and trip-hop sampling. There are few artists who can touch Author in both levels of creativity and production skill, and that's what makes their work so intriguing; a combination of acute attention to detail whilst retaining a sense of warm musicality. The nature of an album like Forward Forever goes a long way to present itself not as a collection of isolated tracks, but as an interchangeable soundscape of musical ideas. Favouring live instruments and unafraid to build tracks up to towering levels of swaying atmosphere and texture, the dedicated musicians strive to accomplish sounds of the highest quality. It epitomises the quest for experimentation within the parameters of electronic music by being innovative both in the studio and on stage.
