- C-Jay is an artist who's music is based on hypnotic journeys. It might be tagged as ambient, but it's much more than that. It's unique! (John Digweed)Born in 1976 in a small town in the rural parts of Holland, multi-talented Dutch artist C-Jay (real name Christian Jansen) was fascinated in electronic and experimental music from artists like Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Tangerine Dream from an early age. At 11 years of age, C-Jay embarked on his first musical forays into digital and analogue instruments, with the enthusiastic love and support of his parents and a local music teacher. His love for synthesizers grew and pretty soon young C-Jay’s bedroom was swamped with analogue synths and drum machines. C-Jay history is as diverse as it gets in today’s dance music business: record store owner (The Sessions Recordstore), label owner (The Sessions Recordings), promoter of his own events (The Sessions), DJ, composer and producer. Owning The Sessions recordstore in the early 2000’s allowed him to keep up-to-date with current musical trends and be a contactpoint for name dj’s getting their weekly vinyl fix. Not content with just a day job, C-Jay decided to take the step to promote his own events at night. He organized some legendary ones during those years, inviting cutting edge artists such as Moshic, Chris Fortier, James Holden, Chris Cowie, Anthony Pappa, Tilt and Quivver to Holland to perform at the Sessions. In 2006, he ditched the bigger venues and went back underground, returning to small more intimate parties in Amsterdam under the long-term trusted name The Sessions. Aside from The Sessions record store and events C-Jay was slowly but surely developing as a skilled, well known composer in the studio. He enjoyed his first global release in 2004, with his track SwayWatch being signed to the Moun10 imprint (owned by long term friend and producer Jaydee) which enjoyed widespread support from artists such as The Flash Brothers, Chris Fortier and Fred Numf. He then joined forces with Jaydee on his second release under their Graylock moniker on First Impression Recordings. These two tracks were perhaps the true beginning of an international profile for this talented Dutchman, as these releases garnered support from many of the top jocks including Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Carl Cox, Chris Fortier and many more. The success of these early productions led to an epiphany for C-Jay - it was time to start his own record label: The Sessions Recordings. The label provided vinyl versions as well as digital ones, and within three releases, C-Jay had the impact he desired: support from the taste-maker DJ’ss as well as dance floors worldwide. A year later, in November 2005, C-Jay’s co-production with his friend Mick Wilson (Tilt / Parks & Wilson) appeared on highly-respected Dutch imprint Cyber Records, distributed by Armada Music nowadays. This instant progressive classic called Darkism was hammered by Anthony Pappa and Hernan Cattaneo, with the Argentine legend closing his Dance Valley Festival 2005 set with this floor filler and Dutch national radio broadcasting the set live. C-Jay subsequently adapted a different approach, deciding to make The Sessions Recordings into a platform for talented young producers such as DubVision, Roger Martinez, Josel & Pedro, Bastian Bouma and Patch Park. First however, it was time for another milestone; C-Jay’s first full length artist album! Released in 2008, Magnanimity was released as a 2-disc CD package with the originals on one disc and remixes from other artists on the second. This album unquestionably took C-Jay to the next level, as the album enjoyed superb reviews and support. In 2011 C-Jay released his second full length artist album called Forever Now. Again, this release got superb international reviews. Dutch magazine OOR reviewed it as outstanding and it ranked in key charts worldwide. One track from the LP, entitled Electric Cafe (with Sezer Uysal) was a top selling dancefloor hit in several countries, with Armin Van Buuren naming it a personal favorite in his sets worldwide. All this studio work and owning a record label, plus promoting his own events led in turn to C-Jay being booked both domestically and internationally. Having shared DJ booths with almost every big star of the scene, C-Jay had become one in his own right. In the last couple of years he found himself playing gigs in Poland, Romania, Holland, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Switzerland, Jordan, Lebanon and the Ukraine. And many more… Back in the studio, the absolute pinnacle of any progressive artist is to sign to John Digweed´s seminal Bedrock label and this dream came true for C-Jay in 2016. He released his BackSlider LP to great acclaim, a stunning collection of deeper sounds, drawing wonderful inspiration from the likes of Jean Michel Jarre, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream and The Orb. This album was certainly a defining moment for C-Jay and saw his status unquestionably reach the next level. The pressure was on to deliver a follow-up for Mr. Digweed’s Bedrock label and the album Echoes did not disappoint. With shimmering futuristic grooves laden with emotion for home listening as well as deeper floors the album was a hit, both on CD as in digital stores. Echoes was released as part of John´s triple album entitled Signals. Signals was released to celebrate 18 years of Bedrock and saw C-Jay become firmly established as a Bedrock artist. John Digweed’s faith in C-Jay as a producer subsequently led to Bedrock’s main man inviting C-Jay to open and close for him at Rotterdam’s Toffler club in 2016, do a warm up for Digweed at Amsterdam’s legendary Melkweg venue in 2017 and most recently an opening set at John Digweed and Sasha’s Resistance tour. All of C-Jay’s sets for Digweed were received with great acclaim. Looking forward, this pioneer of electronic chic now has a busy future with a diary full of club dates and festivals in his native Holland as well as flying the flag internationally. Next to this, towards the end of 2018 his new artist album called “Adem” will be released on RePlug records, the renowed imprint of Cid Inc. This highly-talented artist shows no sign of slowing down: remember the name C-Jay and keep a close eye on this talent whose evolution as a producer and performer remains as relevant now as when he started as a youngster in a small town in the rural parts of Holland many moons ago.
