Passion and consistency are the foundation of a true artist. What’s in a name or status compares not to a focused vision no matter the course of the journey. Eric “Cheric” Chen is a Queens, New York native whose vision of making music that keeps true to himself will never alter. Many artists conform to the norm and “the now,” but Cheric creates from the heart, whether he loves his work or battles the inner critic, he won’t deliver unless the music comes from his soul. A long time native behind the New York decks, Cheric’s admired for his emotive and innovative sound, ever-changing boundaries of the norm and always delivering something new, something to make you feel good. It’s been decades since he was messing with FL Studio back in 2001-2002. “Back then it was called Fruity Loops and nothing I made was really good. I called it "sequenced noise,” the artist laughs about now. It was easy to get inspired by the energy of New York nightlife back then, the experimentation and freedom of the scene was unheard of; those who know, know. Perhaps it was catching Tony Draper live at Exit, or the early days of Sasha & Digweed, Trentemoller, and Danny Tenaglia that changed Cheric’s views on music and awoke the artist within. Around 2009 Cheric began taking his music making seriously. He was determined to build from the ground up and admits his struggles with self-representation, finding time to produce, and trying to make a name for yourself in a competitive, cut-throat city like New York, but his drive and determination deterred not. Consistency, drive, patience, and absolute appreciation for the art of music has carried him great lengths. It all changed the day his now great friend Charles Meyer discovered him for Insomniacs Discovery Project. Their relationship has been one of true musically driven passion that only continues to grow. “I love everything about the music. I am in it for the art and nothing else, I would love to be able to do this full time, but I am content otherwise,” the artist shares. It’s that love and determination that’s landed Cheric gigs at some of New York’s premiere stages, as well as California, China, and the Groove Cruise. He's opened for some of the world’s top artists including Andrew Bayer, Eric Prydz, Armin Van Burren, and Cristoph at The Brooklyn Mirage, Oliver Koletski, Hernan Cattaneo, and closing for Eli and Fur, plus countless solo gigs. He’s never not making music, sharing music, or playing live. Cheric’s music explores the subtle and expansive natures of dance music and that’s landed him original releases and remixes on Click Amsterdam, Cinematique (Manual Music), Baroque, and Box4Joy (Incepto). His remix of Bella Mer’s “Loaded Gun” gained much praise for it’s deep, hypnotizing, progressive soundscape and the story behind it. "Loaded Gun is about the tendency to be drawn toward harm and a desire for danger... a moth to the flame. A world in which every archetype points a loaded gun at each others' heads in judgment and blame." Something many of us can relate to. Other respected originals that move fellow artists and listeners are “Apparition” and “Qvago” on Cinematique, “The Fallen” on Click, and his latest melodic gem, “Zoo Hypothesis” on Box4Joy, a track that takes you on an uplifting, euphoric exploration of mood and sound. Cheric has also remixed the lovely and talented, LA based, Bella Mer ( Bedroom Eyes, Loaded Gun) which can be found as free downloads on their Soundcloud pages. Most recently (2020), Cheric's remix for Zehv's Eastcliff EP, "Raav" along with Amber Long, collectively reached number 2 on Beatports top 100 Progressive house releases! Out on Cinematique. Cheric also officially joined the NY based Ebb & Flow Collective in 2020 as one of their resident Artists. With the inner voice telling him to keep focus and stay on the grind, Cheric continues to progress forward as a true artist. An artist who accepts difficulties and successes all the same in order to manifest his vision, of making music that keeps true to oneself.
