  • When it comes to Techno, Tech-house, and Minimal grooves, Chris Calix always delivers his brand with flair. Im a genre saturated with multitudes of DJ’s, Chris sets himself apart from the hordes.
Without a doubt Chris Calix stems his DJ roots deep into a musical background that includes everything from Punk Rock to New Wave and Reggae. The kind of stuff that gives birth to DJ’s like him. Chris has buried himself in Dance Music for nearly 20 years now. His first experiences include the “true” rave scene of the early 90’s. When, as partner of Illusions, he spun as various warehouse parties across the US. Amazingly, Chris held his first club residency in 1991 at the age of 18, at Paradox in Austin, Texas; pushing the new and trivial Techno sound. Then came a quick hop and skip into the legendary club world of The Tunnel, Limelight, Arc, Warsaw, The End, Pacha, Space, Crobar, etc. At these venues is where he honed his love affair with more intelligent music and clubbing. Within those years he developed an impressive resume while traveling and playing alongside some amazing, yet undiscovered talent of the times. Chris was best known for the underground scene he helped to create within the Caribbean and Latin America. Unbelievably, his infamous events, such as the Cabarete and Cueva parties, are still going on today in Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico respectively. Throughout the nineties and early part of the 2000’s, Chris traveled Europe spinning from club to club where he forged most of his relationships within the Dance Music industry. His history is as varied as many of those who sprung from the same era, such as Mr C, Kelvin Andrews and Eddie Richards. Also, Chris was instrumental in the development of the Miami scene that is so famous today. He has held residencies at the now defunct Crobar, Spin and Priveledge in South Beach. There he has graced the decks alongside talent such as: Matthew Dekay, DJ Three, Lee Burridge, Matthew Dear, Steve Gerrard, Chris Lobsinger, Bill Patrick, Chloe Harris, Stryke and many others. To his credit, Chris has always maintained a reputation as the ‘behind the scenes’ guy. He has been involved in exposing talent and getting deals for many a DJ and producer. His experience in the industry throughout the years has allotted him plenty of air time on the decks and growth as a performer. It is difficult at times to label a DJ like Chris with a particular sound. But, there is no mistaking that the backbone of his music lies in Techno beats and funky basslines. His music reflects his years in this electronic music world where he dabbles in cutting edge grooves strictly. Now, Chris resides in Houston, Texas. Where he is doing what he does best. Helping to develop a scene in virgin territory. Since his arrival he has partnered up with Reverse, a promotions company, where he holds a title as resident DJ and promoter. In Houston, he has played at many venues alongside the likes of Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Armin Van Buurin, Chris Fortier, Ralph Lawson, Shaun Reeves, Grant Aaron (Insideout), Nikola Baytala, Ida Engberg, Konrad Black, Adultnapper, Damian Lazarus, Jamie Jones, Luca Bacchetti, Mikael Stavostrand, etc. However, Chris can be found mostly spinning alongside the Reverse Group at their monthly party, SUB_STANTIAL.
