- Londoner Chris Stanford is the boss of techno label Prodigal Son Records but is also a well respected DJ first and foremost...Over the years he has proven his capability to play for hours and with his consistency to perform each time with a unique, forward thinking set. A strong supporter of new music seaking fresh tracks that push the sound forward but also hold the traditional values of underground dance music, building on emotion, with hints of nostalgia and always an element of moodiness. It didn’t all start with techno though, there was a journey that led to this point. At highschool parties in the late nineties, growing up in Essex, just on the outskirts of East London there was heaps of musical influence... Underworld, The Prodigy and Depeche Mode were local talents that had already reached legendary global status. The UK rave institute Suburban Base, was a label founded by the local record shop Boogie Times, this was where Chris first started building his vast collection of House, Garage, UK Hardcore, Jungle and Drum & Bass. It was a time where creativity was flourishing, musical boundaries were being broken and new genres were being created. Buying and mixing records at a young age, Chris would jump at any opportunity to share his excitement for the vinyl he was picking up on weekly basis, on pirate radio stations, house parties and after the rave parties were where it all started there are many stories to tell. A few years later he began putting on his own nights, he found venues and started booking acts to play alongside him. He became a well known DJ on the London scene playing all the big venues in the city. In recent years he has played in many of Europe's finest techno cities, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Krakow, Hamburg... He has become well known as an after hours DJ playing more morning and daytime parties than he can remember with extended sets that would keep the energy burning on. In 2011, Chris, along with his partner Jackie and then co-producer Dax J, and Gareth Wild launched EarToGround Records and were heavily involved. It was created as a platform for releasing their own music and showcasing others and they also had a sister project LDNwht which released white label VA's. With their knowledge of the industry gained through the early days of the ETG project they went on to start further labels of their own, Dax J with Monnom Black, Jackie with Linda Records and Chris with Prodigal Son. Prodigal Son Records was established in 2015, most importantly it was something Chris could really call his own, its sound, its concept, its feelling. Growing up reading comics as a kid, the artwork had to be illustrative. The artwork is brought to life by talented sketchers and illustrators, but the brief is always Chris’s vision telling the story of a modern, roughneck Prodigal Son with imagery on a dystopian setting. There is a level of quality control with the music, along with the community of artists slowly building over time, hence the slow output in the early years. Unless it’s somebody Chris has met in person or somebody he can envision being a part of the family and the identity of the label, there's only a small chance of onboarding. This may seem unjust to some, but loyalty and relationships built over years is important for developing the labels journey. It is more than likely you will see acts returning to release on the imprint time and time again. Chris finds it fascinating to see how the producers and remixers he’s worked with build on their own sounds and identities, developing as time moves on. The labels style is much based on the influences Chris carries into his own style of djing techno. Elements of dark, moody, rawness with rowdy drums and menacing percussion that keeps the flow going strong. Also, he believes music needs to tell some sort of story otherwise what's the point?! Too dull & deep, sends you to sleep... Too relentless becomes hopeless... but a balanced variety is possible, whilst staying true to your sound. It’s important to remember the sound you are trying to project will come naturally if you stick to releasing & playing what you want to hear, as much as it is about making the dance floor move. By no means should we digest what practically is the same, yet again in disguise. 2020 will see Prodigal Son reach its 5 year milestone having featured producers & remixers such as... Sept, Kas:st, Stephanie Sykes, Jokasti & Nek, Exal, Sosak, Insolate & Arnaud Le Texier, Joe Farr, Inland, Ansome, Inigo Kennedy, A. Morgan, Kaylah, Edit Select, Hector Oaks, He/aT, Nendza, Escape To Mars, Dyad, Setoac Mass, Codex Empire.
