- Ciel is a Xi’an-born and Toronto-based music producer, DJ, pianist, and radio presenter.She is the co-owner of the Toronto electronic music label Parallel Minds; a member of the internationally-renowned women & LGBTQIA+ DJ collective Discwoman; and she’s had a monthly residency radio show on Rinse FM in London since 2018. Her debut EP came out in 2017 on Shanti Celeste & Gramrcy’s UK label Peach Discs with several releases following on labels such as Coastal Haze, Ghostly International’s sister label Spectral Sound, the NYC labels Thanks For Enlightening Me as well as Mister Saturday Night, the renowned German imprint !K7 Records, and a set of digitally-only Ciel tracks that Eris Drew compiled for a double LP vinyl compilation which became the debut release on Eris’ new label Ecstatic Editions. Cindy is a busy bee where producing records is now her top priority, and she often finds herself working on multiple releases simultaneously. Often finding inspiration in the studio by making music with others, collaboration EPs have been numerous with one as Psychedelic Budz with Berlin-based artist D. Tiffany on Planet Euphorique; two with Toronto-based Dan Only as Cloudsteppers came on X-Kalay Records as well as another more recently in early 2024 a returning EP on Peach Discs; one with Montréal's Priori under the name of Loopchasers for US label Terrafirm; another with American artist Ali Berger on Jacktone; and an EP with UK up-and-coming producer Kilig on UK label Unknown - Untitled. As with most of us, the pandemic had a huge impact on Ciel - from debuting her live PA at MUTEK Montreal in 2021 to gaining funding from the Canadian government in 2022 for her debut 'Homesick' which she produced over the lockdowns. Her LP was self-released on her co-owned label Parallel Minds and finally released in November 2023 with critical acclaim from publications such as Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Dazed, and Phonica Records amongst others. Forthcoming in 2024, she will be making her return to MUTEK Montreal for the 2024 edition with a new live show focussed around her debut album, as well as a solo EP on Cleveland’s label SUZI; a CCL collaboration EP on Priori’s label NAFF; a follow-up Psychedelic Budz EP for UK label Banoffee Pies; and a collaborative EP with Mathis Ruffing. As for events, Cindy will be playing festivals such as Kala in Albania, Driaamolen in the Netherlands, and Lighthouse in Croatia. Whether a label boss, grassroots rave promoter, established producer, or adventurous DJ, the same strongly-held beliefs shine through everything Cindy does: that of focus on the community, upholding diversity and inclusivity and playing her part to leave the scene in a better place than when she first entered. At heart, Ciel’s work in electronic music boils down to a simple truth.
