Illyus story has more in common with New York producers such as Todd Terry and Kenny Dope than it does your average Glaswegian house producer. Most people don't know Illyus grew up in Frankfurt/Germany. He credits the city massively with his musical education. When moving back to Glasgow hip-hop took him into Glasgow’s clubs through the world of turntablism. Despite winning several local DJ battles, he was soon switching his production style from hip-hop to house, his love of J Dilla and DJ Premier being supplemented by an admiration for the likes of Kerri Chandler, Theo Parrish and DJ Sneak. Local label Tronicsole and respected vinyl imprint Scucci Manucci were first to pick up on his early house workouts while Roska was such a fan of his work he was playing unsigned tracks on his Rinse FM show. Remixes followed for fellow Glasgow producers Mash and Kevin McKay, the latter on Stefano Riterri’s Congaloid imprint. At the end of 2013 things started to move up a notch. Stefan Riesen got in touch. His Morris Audio label has featured the likes of Huxley, Tiger Skin, Till Von Sein and Kris Wadsworth. Illyus’ “The Issues EP” was the resulting release. Tensnake and Xpress-2 were both fans and Pete Tong played it on the Essential Selection. By then Illyus had become a regular in Glasgow’s coolest house clubs with regular bookings at The Sub Club, Chambre 69 and Saint Judes alongside A-list talent like Benji B, A-Trak and that man Pete Tong again. We’re not long into 2014 but already Illyus has releases on Belfast’s Seven Music plus a collaboration on Glasgow Underground with Barrientos. “Do Anything You Wanna” and “The Times We Shared” has so far picked up support from Radio 1 DJs Danny Howard, Skream, Ally McCrae & Jen Long plus a list of club support that reads like a who’s who in house music right now (John Digweed, Sasha, Gorgon City, Groove Armada, Waifs & Strays, Amine Edge, Funk D’Void, Kry Wolf, German Brigante, Mark Knight, Supernov…). The pair have also remixed Grum’ s new single ‘Tears’, which – again – got the Pete Tong seal of approval. And as if that wasn’t enough Radio 1Xtra and MTV presenter Sarah Jane Crawford just made “Do Anything You Wanna” her Smash Of The Week. With more and more labels now showing interest in Illyus’ work, 2014 should be a big year for the talented Scotsman.
