Jakeone (speltalloneword) Jake's new solo outing is a lo-fi, live take on techno diametrically opposed to certain current trends for bland, characterless tracks aimed solely at the dancefloor. Scottish electronic don Alex Smoke described his new EP as "unusual and really effective" and it's already getting nods from a wide range of forward thinking DJs. No stranger to the live environment, he is taking it to the clubs - the set involves manipulating chopped up loops of his and others' tracks alongside a drum machine, bass synth, FX and the odd twisted vocal snippet. Recent gigs, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and London's new high-profile electronic night Balance, have been met with a rapturous response. He has also just turned in belting remixes for Bomb the Bass (with whom he collaborated on 2008's Future Chaos LP) and Process label-mate Mark O Sullivan. Both out this winter. Moving forward he speaks with recently re-ignited passion - "I've got a f**k of a lot of music on the go - close to an album's worth of my own material, a new Toob EP in the making (his band with Red Snapper drummer Rich Thair. Their 2008 LP "Push Me Pull You" was described by Bleep.com as "the best leftfield pop album of the year") as well as a secret alias project and the odd cheeky bootleg and remix". This, alongside the live angle makes 2010 look pretty good for Jake. Watch this space, so to speak. Grant Heinrich (The X-Agency) Background - Jake first discovered a love of electronic dance music as a young teenager stumbling around the early 90s free rave scene. Captivated by the energy of Detroit's deep bleeps meeting raucous London breaks and balls-out hardcore techno. He soon started playing the odd record at dirty basement parties and piecing beats together on a cranky old Emu Emax sampler. The first proper break came landing a job at London's Orinoco Studios working with likes of The Chemical Brothers, Death in Vegas and more importantly the seminal Warp-signed "fuck-off jazz" band Red Snapper. Although self-admittedly he spent his time there "mainly asleep on the couch" he luckily found a musical ally in Snapper drummer Rich Thair who asked him to come on-board to provide a harder, more electronic edge to their already formidable set-up. His flare for improvising with machines in a live environment shone through and several years of touring the world and writing collaborations followed. At the same time he was cutting his teeth as a solo performer - DJing and playing live techno and electro at London's now infamous Wang parties alongside a lot of electronic music's heavy-hitters including Radioactive Man, Plaid, Mark Broom and Weatherall. He remains a regular and crowd favourite at their nights. In 2004 Jake setup his own label, Flameboy, as an output for "off-kilter, bastardized club music" by himself, Toob as well as other like-minded individuals such as Shirker, Radioactive Man, Si Begg and Vicious Pink Goo. Due it being "incredibly badly managed, I got sick of sticking records in mailers and writing endless emails and the fact we ran out of money" unfortunately it didn't last much beyond it's first year. It did, however, burn brightly - gaining respect from an incredibly wide range of DJs such as Dave Clarke, Laurent Garnier, Billy Nasty, Lee Coombs and Will Saul. Particularly dark hung-over moments in Snapper soundchecks led to Jake and Rich jamming with just the machines and the live drum kit. This was "really quite fun" and of it their band Toob was formed, an ever-morphing experiment in combining the organic with the electronic. Their last album, "Push Me, Pull You" was arguably one of 2008's most criminally over-looked, except by the critics. Bleep.com named it the "best leftfield pop album of 2008", similarly DJ mag called it "one of the best electronic dance albums of the year" and even rocker bible Q named it as 2008's "most ambitious dance album". Similarly a wide range of top DJs loved it - James Holden thought it was "ace" alongside big props from Laurent Garnier and Andrew Weatherall amongst others. They have taken it's dark and energetic take on electronic pop around the UK, Europe and beyond playing at venues such as Fabric, Sub Club, Glade and Glastonbury festivals and perhaps more surprisingly head-lining a 5000+ festival in St Petersburg when Mogwai pulled out. They rocked it. They always do - the heavy bass, Rich's stunning drum skills and Jake's snarling dubbed-out vocals are a winning combination.
