A product of the burgeoning American Underground of the late 90s and early 00s, Jason Short aka Sol Glissant has been moving dance floors and discerning listeners alike for the better half of the last two decades. Championing a bold contemporary sound, Short’s, dense and heavily-layered sound, is punctuated by rich harmonic contrasts and hefty bass surprises. After a few years hiatus to reimagine his latest works, Short is back on the scene armed with a solid string of statement EPs. His celebrated 2020 releases for Mioli Music and Immers Music set the stage for his next three EPs, slated in 2022, for acclaimed imprints Whiskey Pickle, and Denied Music, respectively. Employing an electronic music education he earned as a contributor to many of dance music’s most important North American locales, during some of their essential eras, Jason Short’s story begins with an early childhood introduction to pushing buttons and playing instruments, by way of a musician father with a home studio. Having had exposure to music theory and instrumentation since childhood everything changed in 1997, when he got his first taste of the possibilities of electronic music’s potential at a rave—Home Base in Oakland—during the heyday of The Bay Area’s iconic fabled underground music movement of the late 90s. Cutting his teeth as a DJ working at Smash Music in Jacksonville Beach, FL, Short started DJing at local clubs at the age of 18. After earning a degree in Recording Arts at Full Sail in Orlando, he then moved to Chicago, and it was in the home of house music that he had his first vinyl release. Using a friend's gear to begin creating sketches, he started his artistic journey in 1998. After compiling some material he was happy with, it was his first releases in 2001 that created the initial spark needed to draw interest for his first international booking in Mexico. After continuous subsequent releases and a two-year stint in Miami, Short eventually landed in San Francisco in 2005, after falling in love with the Northern California vibes and sound. His then expanding international profile led him to transatlantic bookings in Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt, Lausanne, Barcelona, and Rome, with Ecuador, Mexico, and Vancouver as regular destinations in his own hemisphere. Continuing to release deep melodic and techy music under his own name, Jason Short started a second project for his more quirky sample-based analog-funk creations, as Sol Glissant. Moving back to the Jacksonville, FL area, and after a brief sabbatical, Jason Short is more inspired than ever to continue his own artistic evolution. Leveraging an electronic music education, he earned as a contributor to many of dance music’s most important North American locales, during some of their essential eras, if 2022 is any sign of what’s next, Short under his own name or as Sol Glissant, is one well-seasoned rebirth to pay attention to.
