  • Jumanne is a dj and music researcher from the Netherlands. DJ-ing since 1996, he pioneered African urban music online through his website Africanhiphop.com and on various radio shows. His mix series Afro Cosmic Club introduced obscure tracks from the '80s.
Growing up in the 1980s, Jumanne’s interest in digging for music was triggered by the emergence of hip hop and electronic music. The search for the samples in hip hop productions expanded his tastes towards jazz, soul and funk. In the early ‘90s, during studies related trips across East Africa, he was introduced to African pop music. Around 1996 he got a monthly residency at a Senegalese-Ivorian party in the Netherlands, playing rumba, zouglou and mbalax from tapes, CDs and vinyl. He managed Tanzanian Maasai hip hop act X Plastaz, with whom he toured in Europe, Brazil and Africa. In 1997 Jumanne started Africanhiphop.com, the first website and online community dedicated to the promotion of urban African music. During the next 20 years he organised numerous recordings, tours and exchanges and consulted for research and publications on urban African music, while producing weekly radio shows for Dutch radio (VPRO 3voor12, NPS Lijn5, FunX and online stations Red Light Radio and Echobox Radio). His mix series Afro Cosmic Club (under the 'Gioumanne' alias) helped promote the sound of African disco from the 1980s and 1990s through platforms such as Fader Magazine, Crack Magazine and Okayafrica. In recent years Jumanne has worked as a researcher and compiler on reissues of vintage African and Surinamese music for labels such as Strut, Soundway, Rush Hour, Afro7 and Vintage Voudou.
