You probably know Kurt Uenala’s work, though that may come as a surprise to you. His name may not ring a bell, but there’s a good chance you’ve heard projects he’s done with Moby, The Kills, and Dave Gahan, to name a few. The latter fostered a friendship, ultimately leading to writing original songs for Depeche Mode. Kurt’s love for vintage synthesizers, dark electronic music, and exploring unusual chord structures found him spending more time in Gahan’s Manhattan studio, where he started writing his own shadowy, melancholic songs, filling them with angular beats and moody atmospherics. Kurt's solo project, under the alias of Null + Void, took shape. Inspired by retro sci-fi, electronic innovators, and new wave, the debut Null + Void album, Cryosleep, showcased Kurt's extensive production experience, plus a deep love of suspenseful, glacial soundscapes and distinctive textures emanating from synthetic sources. It features vocal performances by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Big Pink, Shannon Funchess of Light Asylum, and Dave Gahan, who bring their resonant humanity into the music's austere beauty and cold dynamism. The album’s single, "Asphalt Kiss," nods towards Detroit electro's mechanical bounce, though it has a sinister glint in its eyes. 2022 sees the release of "Manuscript", an EP of compositions set symbiotically with poems written and narrated by Gahan. This collection of ambient pieces were recorded in Uenala’s new studio, a decommissioned hospital situated on an Icelandic fjord, physically and figuratively a long way from his native Switzerland, or New York City, which he called home for many years. An affection for bleak and remote landscapes permeate the new work.
