  • The next chapter for Manami's artistic journey is just beginning.
Manami is shifting gears, cranking up the low-end while steadfast in progressive eclecticism, unmatched dancefloor energy and community values to offer her most honest artistic expression yet through her productions, DJ and hybrid live sets. Having made a significant splash in Bristol and London over the past decade via a fierce reputation behind the decks, Manami now sets her sights on the next. Her forthcoming label and productions exhibit a sonic realignment, inspired by a revelatory introspection that has led to a liberatory opportunity of inner growth. It’s helped distill the next phase of her musical voice with a striking clarity; a sound fusing breakbeat and 140 bpm stylings, often edging into jungle and footwork territories, all doused in prog sensibilities that many will be familiar with from previous productions, or if fortunate enough to witness one of her celebrated DJ or hybrid live sets. It further defines her trajectory, and enhances an-already singular path for her within dance music. Born in Japan and subsequently raised in Bristol, Manami quickly absorbed her adopted city’s roots in dub and house. Foundational early-2010 parties like Slix Disco, Futureboogie, Timedance and Livity Sound were attended regularly, while further raving at Mala’s Deep Medi parties and later Amsterdam’s De School followed. Her musical duality of bass and prog undoubtedly spawned here, inspiring her to co-found the Better Days party alongside her friend Anil and later the Level 1 series and of course an inimitable DJ career. The latter, of course, needs little introduction; raving to a Manami set is a rare pleasure, akin to experiencing a electric-charged cauldron full of sub-growling percs, vintage 140 wobbles and progressive house gliders amongst an abundant of other styles mixed with an acute sensibility. It’s matched by an innate talent for dancefloor communality, showcased effortlessly in her landmark Boiler Room Bristol broadcast. She’s grown to be one of England’s most beloved anything-goes selectors as a result of all this, now flexing her classically-trained musicianship skills with her new hybrid live set up. Highlights over her dj tenure is vast, with appearances at Berlin’s Atonal Festival, Sheffield’s No Bounds, UNFOLD, Junction 2, Amsterdam’s DGTL Festival, a slew of memorable broadcasts for Mixmag and Keep Hush plus dates in Australia, at Strawberry Fields Festival and Sub Club Melbourne, while also tours of India and Japan. Community work is a cause close to Manami’s heart, born from a desire to further explore her racial identity while seeking connectedness beyond the dancefloor. Her membership of the ‘Saffron’ and ‘East & Most’ initiatives highlight this best; the former involves mentoring FLINTA people to DJ via workshops while the latter connects East and South East Asian artists, makers and small business owners through independent projects.
