- MANTISは、Moss（モス）とLa-Pachu（ラパチュ）によるデュオ・プロジェクトである。2005年12月に長野県蓼科で結成され、その後東京を拠点に活動を行う。両者ともにエレクトロニック・ミュージックとダブから多大な影響を受けており、それらの音楽的ルーツを綴じ合わせていくなかで、手法としてのダブのマナー（ミキサーとアナログ機材によるリアルタイムのダブミックス）とエレクトロニック・ミュージックにおけるアウトプットの精緻さ（コンピュータによる制御）それぞれのアドヴァンテージを生かした、ハイブリッド..2007年および2009年にはMoritz von OswaldとMark Ernestusによる伝説的ミニマル・ダブ・プロジェクト、RHYTHM & SOUNDのヴォーカリストであるPaul St. Hilaire（a.k.a. Tikiman。2003年以降は本名のPaul St. Hilaireとして活動）とのコラボレートを敢行、おおきな話題となった。2009年1月には自らが主宰するTiltloose Recordsよりファースト・フル・アルバム『≒dubious』、また、同年12月にヴァイナルEP『≒dubious EP』をそれぞれ発表、RHYTHM &SOUNDを筆頭とするドイツのミニマル・ダブに共振するクールでディープな質感と圧巻のベース、そしてけっして音数の多い音楽ではないミニマルなサウンドを主体としているにもかかわらず1曲につき100以上ものトラックを使用するなど、徹底して細部にまでわたってケアが行き届いた高いレベルのミックスとプロダクション・テクニックによって、日本国内のみならず海外においても評価を決定づけた。 以降イギリスの『WIRE』誌やRed Bull Music Academyで紹介されるなど、着実に歩みを進めつつ新作の制作に専念。2014年8月、Paul St. Hilaireやantennasia（アンテネイジア）のsanといった長年のコラボレーターとの新曲をフィーチャーし、また、変拍子を大胆に取り込んでより深化／進化したリズム・アプローチを身にまとった待望のセカンド・アルバム『Collapsizm』を発表、独自のダブ解釈にさらなる発展を遂げている。『Collapsizm』は、多方面から日本の異才が集結するBLACK SMOKER RECORDSよりリリース。マスタリングは、ミニマルダブの巨匠にして元Dubplates & Masteringのマスタリング・エンジニア（後にマスタリング及びヴァイナル・カッティングをおこなうscape masteringを自身で運営）であるPoleことStefan Betkeが担当。現在、Mossはミックス/マスタリング・スタジオ、Remold Worksを運営。 MANTIS is a Japanese music duo consists of Moss and La-Pachu, formed in December 2005 in Tateshina, Nagono and currently based in Tokyo. Both of the members had significant influence from electronic music and dub, and they developed distinctive “hybrid” sounds from the musical backgrounds. The band employs dub mix techniques, live dub mix with mixer and analog devices, and electronic music technology which enables elaborate control on the sounds. Its live performance effectively using many vintage analog devices as well as lap-top computer drew a great reaction, and they were selected as the opening act for Moritz von Oswald and The Orb when they performed in Japan. Mantis collaborated with Paul St. Hilaire (aka Tikiman), vocalist of the legendary minimal dub project Rhythm & Sound (Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus) in 2007 and 2009 and received high reputations. In January 2009, Mantis released its first full album “≒dubious” and in December the same year vinyl EP “≒dubious EP” from their own record label Tiltloose Records. Its deep soundscape and outstanding bassline resonate well with Rhythm & Sound and other German minimal dub music. Although their music is mainly minimal, they are elaborately made using more than 100 tracks in one song, and its high-level mix and production technique received acclaim at home and abroad. Since then, Mantis has focused on their new works while making steady progress as receiving media coverage including The Wire magazine (UK) and Red Bull Music Academy. In 2014, Mantis released their much-anticipated second album “Collapsizm” in which the artists further developed its unique interpretation of dub and incorporated a deeper and more complex rhythm structures using irregular meters. The album also features new tracks with the longtime collaborators Paul St. Hilaire and san from antennasia. The “Collapsizm” was released from BLACK SMOKER RECORDS which covers a lot of avant-garde Japanese artists in the various genre. The mastering work was done by a legendary minimal dub artist and mastering engineer Stefan Betke aka Pole who formally worked at Dubplates & Mastering and now owns mastering and vinyl cutting studio Scape Mastering. They released a vinyl “Collapsizm EP” in 2015 and “Pulverized EP” in 2016 which included a remix work by Burnd Friedman. They are releasing a new vinyl “Resolution EP” which will include a remix by Pole. Moss runs a mixing and mastering studio Remold Works. La-Pachu is working on his solo project and recording is in process.
