  • Mark Reeder is a label owner, musician, producer and remixer. He's lived in Berlin since 1978 and runs his MFS label since 1990. Also known for the documentary "B-Movie (Lust&Sound in West-Berlin 79-89)"
Mark Reeder was born 5 January 1958 and grew up in Manchester. Before moving to Germany in the late 1970s, Reeder worked at a small Virgin Record shop in Lever Street, and briefly played in the progressive rock formation Joe Stalin’s Red Star Radio Band, after which, he co-founded a new wave punk band in 1977 'The Frantic Elevators', together with Neil Moss and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red) where he played the bass. Reeder went to Berlin in 1978 to buy some records and never returned. He has been living and working there ever since. He was the German promoter for Joy Division and the representative for legendary Manchester record label Factory Records from 1978-1983 and has remained New Order's 'Man in Berlin' ever since. In 1981, he formed the synth-post-punk band Die Unbekannten. Die Unbekannten became known for their dark and gloomy, miserablist sound and are meanwhile considered to be one of the Godfathers of German Goth. They also released 'Don't Tell Me Stories' the first record to feature a prototype Roland TR606 drum computer. During the early 80s, Reeder co-managed Gudrun Gut's all-girl avant-garde group Malaria! together with Jochen Hulder (Totenkopf Records). He was also the live sound engineer for Malaria! as well as Die Toten Hosen, and on a couple of occasions for Family Five and Einstuerzende Neubauten, amongst many others. He co-organised the first secret, underground and highly illegal punk concerts in Budapest, Prague and in East Berlin for his own band, Die Unbekannten and also Die Toten Hosen. In 1987, Reeder formed the short lived Alien Nation, a purely electronic project, created to explore the newly emerging acid-house sound. He is also the founder and owner of the first East German electronic music label MFS (Masterminded For Success) which he started in 1990, after producing the last album of communist East Germany - "Torture" by Die Vision - in late 1989, for the then communist state-owned record label AMIGA. http://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2013/09/die-vision-last-album-in-east-berlin. MFS helped to launch the careers of many, now famous artists, such as Ellen Allien, Cosmic Baby (Harald Bluechel), Dr Motte, Effective Force (Johnny Klimek), or Mijk van Dijk. In 1991, Reeder discovered the teenage Paul van Dyk, and spent 8 years guiding and paving his way, building up this now, international DJ, to superstardom. He initiated, designed and successfully outlined Paul van Dyk's early career from 1991 until 1999. MFS pioneered in the early version of trance. In February 1992, MFS released the world’s first Trance compilation (Tranceformed from Beyond). Many of the MFS artists were also to feature on the very first Tresor records compilation. In the mid 90s, Reeder released remixes by MFS artists Paul van Dyk and Mijk van Dijk of Japanese band Denki Groove. This was the first time SONY music had ever licensed a track to an indie label. He invited Takkyu Ishino to Berlin to perform at the E-Werk during the Loveparade, effectively launching his international DJ career. In 1999 with the departure of van Dyk from MFS, Reeder created Flesh. A new label for a new, yet provocative idea: Wet&Hard which he had conceived together with Hungarian DJ Corvin Dalek. Their aim was to bring back the sexuality to the sexual ritual of dancing. Reeder produced Corvin’s controversial 'I am a Dalek' album and numerous Flesh singles. Reeder's own clandestine musical career has spanned over more than four and a half decades. He has been an active participant and a behind the scenes influence for many now famous artists, spread over a wide cross section of contemporary musical genres. In 2008, he decided to put MFS on ice and returned to making, producing and remixing music. Meanwhile, Reeder is an distinguished remixer and has meanwhile produced numerous remixes for such established artists as New Order, Depeche Mode, The Pet Shop Boys, Yello or Die Toten Hosen. He's also composed music for a selection of films and advertisements (in the UK) including the music score for Joerg Buttgereits controversial film "Nekromantik 2" as well as his theatre play "Captain Berlin vs Hitler" (2008) and for his own 2015 documentary film about 80’s West-Berlin music scene “B-Movie (Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 79-89). http://www.dietotenhosen.de/band/freunde-des-hauses/ark-reeder as well as for a ton of new and lesser-known artists. In 2008 he made an album of retro-remixes for Blank & Jones (for the album ReOrdered) which also featured his reworking of A Forest with new vocals by Robert Smith of The Cure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqRrfWj4Ux8 Reeder also specialises in 5.1 multi-channel recordings and surround remixes. In 2011, he released 'Five Point One' an album of 5.1 remixes produced in wrap-around DOLBY surround sound on Werner Schroedl's Kennen label. This album features his remix of John Foxx’s legendary hit Underpass, as well as remixes for Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Anne Clark, Bad Lieutenant and Die Toten Hosen. https://www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=12402&L=0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-yNw_U_Qgo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzSBsNndmQM In 2015, he starred as the main protagonist in the documentary film about his life in cold-war Berlin B-Movie (Lust & Sound in West Berlin 79-89) which was made up from original Super8 film footage from the era, it’s a film about Berlin as seen through Reeder’s eyes and shows his life in the avant-garde music scene during the 1980s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSJgf3_3T74 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj3qj6KNcLU The film has been very successful throughout the world and achieved high critical acclaim http://fourthreefilm.com/2015/02/b-movie-lust-sound-in-west-berlin-19791989/ It is meanwhile considered to be a culturally valuable piece of German Visual History. New Order loved B-Movie so much, they used scenes from it for their Singularity video https://vimeo.com/156736449 for which Reeder also made a remix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0JyMCoCGZI Today, he is not only a highly sought-after producer and remixer, but also as a lecturer or speaker, due to his valuable first-hand experience and understanding of the Berlin music scene in East and West Berlin during the 1980s and 90s, continuing up to the present day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo77Vi4AlaM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzSBsNndmQM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX-Z7Ah37wI His 2017 album release “Mauerstadt” features his song-writing, production and musical collaborations with Manchester legends New Order and The Inspiral Carpets, as well as with The KVB, Maja Pierro, Queen of Hearts, and Ekkoes. During an extensive two-month B-Movie/DJ tour of China in 2017, Reeder recorded the album 'Oracles' for legendary all-girl band from Beijing, Hang On The Box, the production mixdown was completed with his studio partner Micha Adam upon his return to Berlin. While in China, he also discovered an exciting and radical young Chinese band from Chengdu, called STOLEN. He saw STOLEN perform live at the Morning House music festival in Chengdu, and was so impressed, they made a demo together. In February 2018, STOLEN came to Berlin to record their album FRAGMENT with Reeder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djhw6SQV5pM After a 10-year hiatus, Reeder decided to reactivate MFS especially to present the new STOLEN album vinyl release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9U84UETNdo His friend Bernard Sumner heard the album. He immediately loved it and endorsed it on the New Order website http://www.neworder.com/newordernow/2018/10/12/amessage-from-bernard.html New Order invited STOLEN to perform as their support act on their European tour in October 2019. This European tour was a huge success for STOLEN. It propelled them from virtual obscurity to the most famous band from China. Firmly putting China on the new musical map. In 2018, Reeder wrote and produced a love song together with the acclaimed Lithuanian singer Alanas Chosnau, for the French cold-war thriller Le Chant du Loup (The Wolf’s Call) (2019) directed by Antonin Baudry. During the latter half of 2019 Reeder and Alanas Chosnau were back in the studio to record their retropop album, Children of Nature. http://www.electricityclub.co.uk/?s=children+of+nature Balancing topics of love and fear for the environment, with a dystopian vision for the future. Due to production and travel restrictions however, the album was released digitally on MFS, during the CoronaVirus lockdown on 26 May 2020 - the 96th Birthday of Reeder's Mother. https://louderthanwar.com/alanas-chosnau-mark-reeder-children-of-nature-album-review-beautiful-elegiac-and-compelling-like- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw8otLDryaU
