- Mumdance is an artist, curator and DJ from the UK, honing an influential and often imitated sound which focuses on twisting grime, techno, avant-garde electronics and the UK soundsystem continuum into strange new shapes.As an artist, Mumdance is behind some of the most innovative and influential dance records of the last decade. His collaborations with MC Novelist (‘1 Sec’ and ‘Take Time’, released on XL Recordings and Rinse), the critically acclaimed ‘Proto’ album with regular production partner Logos and a series of show-stopping club 12”s with Pinch all echo around the electronic music landscape today. In their summary of the 2010s, Resident Advisor named ‘Take Time’ one of the 20 greatest singles of the decade. As a DJ, Mumdance is known for his tastemaking and extraordinary breadth, something encapsulated by the Radio Mumdance project. A series of weekly radio shows on Rinse FM and NTS which saw him play back-to-back sets with a who’s who of iconic electronic artists (including DJ Stingray, Ben UFO, Josey Rebelle and Nina Kraviz), the series helped establish Mumdance as one of the circuit’s most-loved and adaptable DJs. After taking three years away from music in 2019, Mumdance returned invigorated in 2022, launching an extensive online archive of his work from the past 14 years (hosted on mumdance.com). He returned to the DJ fold with a closing set at Primavera 2022, debuting a four-deck showcase that has fast become a new trademark, weaving instinctively and intricately between techno, grime, jungle, hardcore and more. After posting the recording of his set at Primavera online, Pitchfork named it one of the Best Mixes of 2022 So Far, calling it "as giddy as peak-time sets go". With his first release in several years due out in late 2022 and a series of follow-ups already scheduled for 2023, Mumdance looks set to start a new chapter that could be his most prolific and prodigious yet.
